I discovered that you can use your steel card guard as a very effective mirror!
Put the card guard flat on the table and you can now use it to peek bottom cards. Very useful if you use some kind of stacks. Keep doing miracles, I do See an pic of a card guard Mats |

Another extremely effective mirror is a dinner knife (if you are performing at a dinner table).

Nick, you are a hero. Today I was performing some card magic at a party and I used your idea to peek a card. Very ingenious.

Kjellstrom,
I'm glad you tried it, and that it worked for you. The dinner knife as a mirror concept is incredibly powerful since the dinner knife blends into the table during a meal. It is so natural an item on the table that it is essentially invisible in the minds of the spectators. I honestly don't remember where I learned it -- I've been using this principle for well over 25 years. Nick

That reminds me of a picture I saw in a magic book I studied many, many years ago. I will not be able to recall the name of the author or the title of the book.
But the picture showed the point of a dinner knife used to cut (!) a deck allowing the performer to peek the index of the card mirrored in the knife before the spectator looks at his cut-to card. I was impressed by the ingenious idea, but honestly I have never used it. Nick's use of the knife without calling attention to it is undoubtly more subtle. But there might be a place for the "cutting" idea in the right context. Trolle |

Trolle,
The book is "Al Koran's Professional Presentations" (1968, published by Harry Stanley, London, England)) and the piece is call "The Encore Card Stab". It is a brilliant routine that I still perform to this day. Nick

Thank you! The trick was "well hidden" at my own bookshelf! One of the first serious books I bought back in the 70's. I never used the trick because I was not ready to use a stacked deck at hat time. I guess it was too advanced for me - but it made me think. Time to go back and reread! Trolle |

I have been known to use the card guard as a "Shiner" as well.

Yes - the use of a cup full of coffee is even better, and nobody see any reflection unless they are looking after it.

If you wear a watch with a metal band and a wide smooth clasp on the back, this can sometimes function as a shiner.
