Title: TWGMBYWGM Folding Coin/ Coin in Bottle
Medium: DVD Arena: close up stand up Available: Any shop, distributed by Murphys Magic Supplies Ahhhh the folding coin. Imagine how many of these things sold because of David Blaine, gazzilions of ‘em. I’ll be honest with you, I didn’t think this would be the best of collections because how many ways can you do a coin to bottle using this wonderful lil’ tool? I gave it a shot because, surprisingly to me, I had never seen any of the videos from L&L or A1 (who also has material on here) that were covered on this compilation of greatest hits. The others in the series were so good I figured it would be worth and shot and let me tell you, I’m sure happy I took that shot. The production levels are fine, as you would expect from L&L and A1 Multimedia, so that isn’t a problem. The material is very David Roth and Michael Ammar heavy, and that is fine too as I really think they are top dawgs in magic. The one thing that struck me when I saw a very young Michael Ammar was how thick something was that isn’t there any longer, you know what I mean Ammar fans. No! Not his hair, I’m talking about his accent. I knew Ammar was from West Virginia but I was always surprised when talking with him how clearly he spoke. I was raised in the South so I can detect accents but he really has a neutral accent. Well on this DVD you hear what Michael REALLY sounds like, at least prior to doing what ever he did to lose the accent. It was like listening to Wyatte Earp give magic instruction! I got a real kick out of it…oh, he had a full head of hair too. The DVD opens with Roth doing that cute little trick of biting a quarter. I know it is a ‘street masterpiece’ but it goes back a long time and it is just a quickie. Next my favorite magician Johnny Thompson performs his version of Coin to Bottle and he is assisted by the late great Jerry Camero. Nice handling, more gutsy than I might have been but I now know I can go a bit further with the routine now. This handling would interest the party goers as you can do it with a bottle just handed to you (all can but the routine is designed for that). Next we get Karl Normans handling, which is very similar to how Johnny does it, nothing really new to add. Roth returns with his version, which again is similar to that shown by Johnny in basics but Roth takes the presentation further. He also, and I was happy to see this, includes the part where the label goes into the bottle and it is logical in presentation. This goes back years before Unlabeled and thus why in that review I mentioned a credit to Roth would be in order. This is a very nice routine but I don’t know if the bottles are still available so you have to make your own and Roth isn’t tipping how he does it. We move on to a couple different presentations by Michael Ammar. Michael again shows his attention to detail and understanding of how magic should be presented. His presentation and set up etc is very different than the other guys and worth looking at. I was familiar with this routine because of the book The Magic of Michael Ammar, a very good book by the way. I enjoyed Michaels presentation even if it made me want to go make grits. We now leave the world of the bottle and go into the two pieces that I think alone are worth the low price on these DVDs, courtesy of Mr. David Roth. Magic Mint is a quick routine where a quarter is cleanly shown and placed in the hand, hand opens and you have a quarter and a half in it. You then remove the half and with the pass of the hand the quarter has become a half. This looks great, just great, really a good idea for walk around. Next was my favorite routine, and the last routine, on the DVD, Coins Through Table. The first coin through table fried me completely and had I not had knowledge about what the dvd was about and some experience myself I wouldn’t have figured it out. This is the most visually shocking coin through table I’ve ever seen. Must be done seated and w/in the reach of most magicians this dang routine will get that gap mouthed look so many are after from the spectators. I’m surprised I’ve not seen it before and I am so happy to have stumbled across it. Another winner in the WGMetc series. Oh, one thing they didn’t include was what I like to do with a folded coin. I make it look like I’m shoving it into my arms. Kids like that because it looks like I’m hurting myself. Now I have to go dig out my durn coins. Hey, if your local shop, if you have one, doesn’t have this line of DVDs have then contact Murphys Magic Supplies and GET THEM. If anyone from L&L is reading this, thank you for keeping the prices down, you rock! |

MagicSanta--Thanks for a great, and very thorough review. I was considering this DVD, but had some of the initial reticence you mentioned you had. Your review removed that and I just placed an order for it. Can't wait to get it. Thanks!

Nice review, Magic Santa. Roth does explain how he puts the label inside the bottle on the lecture dvd that L&L recently gave away with orders. I think it was recorded in the mid 80s. Does Roth not get credit on the "Labelled" dvd? He should.

Cameron, do you know if the Roth lecture DVD you mention is available for purchase anywhere? Thanks.

Ohhh, I didn't know he tipped it. I saw Roth lecture many years ago and he wasn't telling. No, on Labelled, which got a positive review, they did not credit Roth and I think they should. He predated the credits they did give, all from the same circle of magicians I might add, but I'm not even saying it is original with Roth, his is just the earliest I'm familiar with.
