Start with a strong CP. After that your thumb should be strong enouth. Not just the strength of the thumb but placement of the coin and technique to achieve maximum distance. Think squeezing a watermelon seed. I learned mine from Joe Jesse (Dredz) an awsome coin guy.

Like apollo robbins said about shoot: they have in japan this techinque to improve the muscle pass by doing it with heavier objects than the coins you normally use.
practice with heavier coins or attach a piece of metal to your coin and practice with that. when you go back to normal coins you will have a much stronger muscle pass;) good luck! -Matt

Simple: Practice, Practice, And Practice.
I asked Lance Armstrong how I can be a better Bicyclist, He told me to ride more. The Muscle pass is just that. Using a Muscle. It's like going to the gym and lifting weights, you need to Always do it to get better and to stay in shape. IMHO, it's the only way. |

To master this, I really squeezed for about 2 days. during this 2 days, I hardly got it past 10cm. I practiced so much until my hand was brused.. then I gave it about a week's rest. when I tried again, I could do it more than 1m into the air

Oh my god! I have boon practiceing the muscle pass for 2 day now, my hand is wasted, I can barely feel it but I`m sure progressing with this move. I sure hope to get the coin to go a longer distance in the air. I can barely stand the pain my hand is going trough

Mzr9mm,
Try taking every other day off. Once the initial bruising is over you will get you calous. I've been able to get a shelf like area around my thumb muscle that helps me CP amd MP. Trying to MP while your hand is hurt is not going to speed the process...it may introduce bad habits i.e. moving your hand to cheat extra distance.

Also try going in MP positon after executing a coin roll. This will help you with both sleights. I usually put a stack of dollars on the table, coin roll, then MP into a ball cap or the other hand. I treat it just like every other sleight be it card or coin. Repition is the key.

He said it's really not necessary to use heavier weight to train for the muscle pass, practicing with a half dollar will get you way over 15cm, which is all you really need, anything beyond that is not that useful. You might want to invest your time on some other things. Btw~ I don't see what's the hurry, these moves take time to develop, just keep practicing. Good Luck Brian |

I was practising my muclse pass today and a guy said "Holy ****, the coin jumped from your hand to the other!". He tried for hours. Makes the time well spent.

Over the years(since 1976) I have learned and abandoned many moves and routines.
The M.P. is one that back then took about 6 months (and 31 years) to improve. I use it in most shows, whether during pre or post.... Over the years I have had the opportunity to teach it one to one to many wonderful magicians. It is good to give and receive. It is fun to us a lighter object as well as stuff like 2 Morgans at the same time. (a visual coins across ..coins going sideways left to right and right to left..) Or 2 morgans from the same hand.... It took me about 6 months of messing with different positions in my palm, but on that day that it popped up into the other hand- yeah, I squealed like a 10-year-old girl. This is a move worth investing the time. Not only is it a great utility, but an amazing feat of magic in itself. I like when someone says during a routine, "those must be trick coins." I smile and say, "well, yes, like most coins, this one falls down... but it also falls up!" Double-takes ensue and the spectators start to doubt their sanity... the MP is simply brilliant.

I am a bit confused about the muscel pass is the spectator suppose to see the coin pop up and go to your other hand or is it suppose to look like a vanish?

One application is the Anti-Gravity effect, where the coin goes up defying gravity.
But is has other uses to it. Shoot Ogawa has some great routines where he uses MP to clean up. I think there's a lot of uses of the MP, but the move itself to laymen make them gasp most of the times. Practising that as we speak. Already training you hand for CP for a long time helps you get a good MP much faster. When I started playing with the move, I already had some strength on the muscles, as I practised a long time to CP. (of course, there's still much to practise, that's the beauty of it) |
