I don't know if this would be the right place to post this but I will try. I am closing a show over in California. They wanted me to do my floating ball. I told them since I was only flying in for two days, I wouldn't have enough set-up time and couldn't do the trick. I think they are looking for me to do something as equal value or just-as-stunning. (I'm closing a huge show, it has to be really good.) I just don't know what to do. I really don't have anything that will play that big, be that impressive, and will still fit in my suitcase.
So...Scenario: -Nice Big Theatre -Professional Sound and Lighting -At least five hours worth of set-up time -Pack in my truck, nothing huge -I am capable of bringing an assistant -Has to be stunning, I'm closing my segment with whatever this might be. Any suggestions? -Matt |

I did a Kuma Tubes routine to close out a segment. Lots of colorful production silks, and a parasol production "stolen" under the silks. I then produced the bowl filled with rice, had a very long pouring sequence, and ended with the production of a 12-inch by forty-foot tie-dyed streamer, a six-foot tie-dyed silk, and a six-foot butterfly silk (all P&A). We held the butterfly up for a few seconds and yanked it up, revealing my daughter holding an "The End" silk (upside down). The butterfly fell behind her beautifully.
When we produced my daughter, there were, iterally, gasps from the audience, and it was all so simple. Hope this helps. PM me if you want more information.

Charles Waller's "Transmogrification" from Hilliard's "Greater Magic" (P.976) will fit in your suitcase and transform you into the show's MC, or whomever, while you reappear at the back of the audience and race back to the stage for your applause.
If you don't have "Greater Magic," Jim Gerrish's version with PVC Pipe "handles" is in his PVC Illusions Book 2 (on my site) and it is called "Transfigmigration." While the two PVC pipes he has added make the illusion easier to work (and you might be able to pick some up in California after you get there), they aren't absolutely necessary for the operation of the effect and the method of operation is essentially the same.

LOL!
Actually most illusionists I know, including yours truly, have this uncanny ability to do just that with their shows.

Most magicians I know would rather see something presented well than see something "really impressive" presented poorly. Maybe you could look through Tarbell or some of the older reference books and find something that people might not have seen in a while. Presenting one of those in a historical context might be a "breath of fresh air" for those in attendance.

If I were you, and had an assistant with me to do the gig, I would DEFINITELY do Andrew Mayne's "Stripper" illusion from his book, Illusion FX. It combines a straitjacket escape with a big illusion finish, and ends with you appearing in the audience. It is a great illusion for your conditions and will easily fit in your suitcase.
