I've just booked a school show for a Friday night. The time surprised me. I thought nearly all school shows were during the week between 10 and 3.
Is it common to have school assemblies at night?

It's not an assembly. It might be a fund raiser.

I do after school shows all the time. Some are after-school programs for kids without babysitters, some are "Get the family away from the TV" nights., Some are even after School Board meetings. They are not as uncommon as you might think.

Another phrase they use for an evening school event, besides fundraiser, is a school family night. They have those to build school community. Sometimes they charge an admission fee, and sometimes they don't.
If you ask them what they are calling it, and why they are having it, you'll get the information you are seeking. I did a school fundraiser last Friday night, but their goal was more about an (affordable) family night, than to make loads of money. Different customers have different objectives. Just ask, then you'll know what to deliver. - Donald P.S. I've done shows at school assemblies, school events, school family nights, school fundraisers, school fun fairs, after-school programs, literacy evenings, etc. Each type of event has different needs.

FYI- I do quite a lot of these "after school family fun night" programs and they are always a success, if promoted the right way. However, and this is just MY opinion....I don't recommend that you do an educational / motivational program in the evening as kids tend to "tune out" during the evening time when you try to educate them. What I do is a family friendly "just for fun" program with no message. They have always worked well for me.
Best of luck whichever route you go! |

You're right. More emphasis on entertainment in the evening shows is a good idea.

I have been contracted for after school evening programs for the following reasons.
Free Food and Entertainment brings out better parent participation at times. Especially the good free food. Graduations from Family Juvenile Court After School Program Seasonal Family Parties Enjoy...Evenings are much prefered over my recent 1:30 A.M. After Prom..As I mentioned elsewhere the biggest trick was my illusion of energy. In the back of my mind was that tiredness can cause car accidents as well as other influences. Harris

Call your client back, fish for information so you walk in knowing what the "title" is of the event so you thank them for inviting you to it after your show...amongst other important things....

Yep, I knew this show's objective before I booked it -- it's to entertain and reward the kids for academic progress, just for fun, not motivation or education. (And quite right guys, you should never book a show of any kind without knowing the customer's objectives first).
What surprised me was the time. Interesting. Thanks for the information! Abby http://www.AbbyLondon.com
