Hi,
I am having alittle trouble with exact placement of the deck in my hand - is my 2nd finger supposed to be touching the top right-hand corner? also, when I buckle the bottom card... which fingers holds the deck in place firmly in my hands? - after buclking the bottom card, I am having trouble with: keeping the deck in place while buckling the bottom card moving the bottom card out, so it can be taken with my other hand. thanks ryan |

The Erdnase Grip is more of what you describe. The 1st finger is near the front corner and the 2nd finger controls the corner.
Marlo's Master Grip (at least I assume you mean this), has the 1st finger controlling the corner and the other fingers on the side. Most of what you describe above is a matter of working with the cards. Remember GRIP is a noun and not a verb Do not 'GRIP' the cards. It requires a light touch that comes with practice. From the Erdnase Grip, the third finger would buckle the card slightly. Master Grip either the 2nd or 3rd finger but more importantly all the fingers can move slightly in unison to free the card for the deal. I would recommedn Marlo's Seconds, Centers, Bottoms book and the Erdnase book "Expert at the Card Table" if you don't already have it.

On this subject, I have Marlo's RCM and Lovell's Gambling with cards. I can perform the buckle move but feel that there is too much flash since my 2nd finger is essentially manually buckling the card diagonally from the far corner on the face of the bottom card, unlike in Lovell's demonstration where the cards are buckled by diagonal pressure of the first finger leaving the 2nd only to slip the card to the side. I have relatively small hands and wondered whether my inability to grip the cards safely using only my first finger might make lovell's version impossible/highly difficutl for me.

Marlo teaches the technique of the fingers moving in unison to free the bottom card in his "Seconds, Centers, Bottoms book (or chapter in the larger RCT book). It gets away from the old time technique that was the 'knuckle flash'.
I have small hands also and it does not make a difference. Remember, no matter who's technique you use, it is still a matter of adapting it to your hands. What works for them does not necessarily mean it will work for you as written.

One of the best bottom deals IMO is the one Dr. Elliot taught Vernon. It's in, if I remember correctly, The Ganson/Vernon book, Ultimate Card Secrets. The deck is gripped by the index finger in front and the little finger at the back. There is no buckling or push off of the left fingers. This is a "take" type BD. What I like about it is it works well no matter what the condion of the cards is, and you don't have the "tell" from the push off finger.

Larry, I liked that deal for awhile. Just did not like the Straddle Grip used to deal the cards. But, for a beginner trying to get a bottom deal down, you are right, it is is to get into this deal and you can do it even as the cards get a little old and out of shape so to speak.......

Quote: I need to agree with you on that, plus I don't think is the best bottom out there. First off all what are the reasons you learning bottom deal?

Try dealing one top, one bottom, two tops, two bottoms etc. Using 2-1.5 decks at same time, so when you reach one deck it will be much easier. For more info use search, and go to gambling spot, there are already enough topics about it. Pavlo

I'm practising the Cigar Bottom. It looks quite natural, and using the 3rd finger easilly gets the card off the bottom.

I combines Marlos master grip along with the cigar bottom deal. With that my grip never changes from regular deal to seconds, centers or bottoms. You should read up on many bottom deals and grips and find the one that Is best for you. Just because this guy does it well doesn't mean it will work for you. To contradict myself though just about anything will look good with practice. You will be better off finding a grip that suits your style tho. IMO

I use the strike bottom deal from masters grip, however I sometimes use the bottom deal taught in Phantoms of the card table, which can be used from straddle grip, and it works fine for me.
