Hi guys!
I have a shipping problem. I ordered something from a member of the Café and has not come. This person shipped it through usps the 4-6 week shipping method to Toronto Canada in late January but still has not come and it is May!I don't think it was insured because it can't be. Do you think it is lost and will not come at all, or will it come soon? Any help on this will be appreiceated! Many thanks Eric |

This is what you do, have the SHIPPER contact UPS and put in a claim, they normally won't accept it from the consignee, that is you. He will need to give them the tracking number etc, after 12 days they will conduct a search, it has been well past that so no biggie. He will have to tell UPS how it was packaged, what it looked like, etc. and they will look for it...that is IF he really shipped it. I don't know what you ordered but the covered value is $100.00 w/out you requesting insurance. If the guy really shipped it (I've shipped, over the last 20 odd years, around 300,000 to 400,00 shipments and I've only had three come up flat out missing...I was in the distribution business).
Customs in Canada is tougher than most realize but if the docs were done right and your phone number was on the invoice, and it better have been there, shouldn't be a problem....again IF it really shipped. Oh wait, I just saw you put USPS, forget what I just stated, you may be SOL if the guy just put it in the mail. If he has a tracking number there is hope, either way you should certainly have it by now. |

You might check with your local post office, and see if any package for you is being held there with customs owing.
That happened to me once. I was waiting for a parcel, and somehow the first notice that they were holding the package for me was never delivered. The package had been waiting for me at the post office for about a month. Luckily, the post office sent me a second notice and I was able to claim the package before it was sent back to the sender.

The problems are people don't know how to identify goods to get them through customs as quickly and cheaply as possible. I've done it for years so it is just something I do. Using the wrong description can cost a lot of money. The reason Canadian customs is tough is lots of Americans treat them like a 51st state and so customs wants to make sure people know their goods are crossing a border. I've not really had a problem with them in the last 20 plus years but I know lots of guys who have.

Yes thanks for your help!
How do I get notified if my package is waiting there. Where do you think my package is? How does it get "lost" exactly? thanks a bunch! Eric |

If the shipper did not put a FULL return address (name included) Canada will reject it at customs. I had this happen awhile back, but now that I know, I always use a full return address. Silly rules, but they can hold up packages for awhile.

I quit going to Canada on photo assignments. They made me pay tax on my own stuff (refundable about six months later) and it took over two hours at customs to fill out the paper.
Another time I shipped press releases (for a ract team) and the Canadian Govt. refused to let them into the country. 100 sheets of printed paper. They said "You should have had a Canadian company print them." By the time I found out the event was over and our team didn't get the press coverage. STUPID.

The big problem is, is these are rare tenyo items that I was able to buy so I need these. Please help. What should I do? The person is willing to give a refund, but would rather have my items.
thanks in advance Eric |

For Canada it is extremely important that the contact name AND PHONE NUMBER is on the paperwork. I was always being called for phone numbers by Canadian customs. I can't tell you about the post office but the most common cause of loss by UPS or Fedex other than just a bad address is damage. They use a conveyor system to move the material and boxes get crushed and contents poured out and if they don't know what goes with what that is the way it goes. UPS does a great job notifying people of the damage though. I may have only loss around four boxes in twenty years but I've had a couple hundred destroyed or spilled out.
