Saw Derren at Southend last night and have to say it was an incredible show which far exceeded my expectations. I took my parents along and they were just blown away. The mobile phone trick had me scratching my head thinking "What the...!?!?!?!"
Derren just seems to get better and better with each tour. If you can get tickets you are in for a real treat. 10/10 |

I've just got back from a few days in sunny Wales which gave me the
chance to attend the new Derren Brown show "An Evening of Wonders" in Cardiff on Thursday night. I don't want to reveal any specific effects to ruin the surprise for anyone due to attend but, judging by the standing ovation from the packed audience at St David's Hall, I think it is safe to say this was another major success for Derren. I thoroughly enjoyed the evening but thought it certainly had a different "feel" from his previous live shows – a little more mainstream and not quite so dark and scary. It also had a few firsts – I think I'm right in saying that it featured the very first card trick in a live Derren show (excluding ESP cards), and the very first stage illusion (i.e. not mentalism). It was also interesting to see him using a number of standard dealer effects - presented brilliantly. Anyone who peruses the dealer ads in Genii or MAGIC will recognise one of these as soon as you walk into the theatre, and this actually consistutes the finale of the show. The show is similar to previous productions in that the first half is a mixture of effects and the second half is basically a complete act – I don't think I'm giving too much away by saying it's probably the best Q&A act you'll ever see, and certainly had me totally baffled. Derren also adds his own unique touch of drama to the proceedings and rightly deserved the standing ovation at the end. If you haven't already seen the show beg, steal or borrow to get a ticket – you'll have a wonderful evening. I also managed to have a chat with Andrew O'Connor and Anthony Owen who were both at the same performance. |

I saw the show in Scotland on Friday 1st June at the Festival Theatre in Edinburgh. I was with my wife and three outher lay-people. They all enjoyed the show very much. I agree with Magical Lady's comments 100%. I didn't get a chance to chat with Derren after the show but one of my party got his book signed by Derren and found him to be very chatty and pleasant. Derrens show had me comletely spellbound and a few of his routines left me quite puzzled. Derren has every right to be pleased with his new show. 10 / 10

The Q & A (yes it was as already stated as good a Q & A as you will see) was, for me personally, INCREDIBLY lengthy. However, if you are NOT a magician/mentalist it's easy to see how this show gets 10/10.
Having said that, it must be wonderful to perform to an audience who are SOOOOO up for it. Bobser.

Saw the show last night with a few non magicians and my wife to be...
excellent show... I didn't like the floating table as others have said or the pendulums, but I can see why both where in there... The q&a was pure class.. seemed like (and I may be wrong) a number of methods rolled into the one routine... not wanting to spoil anything here for others still waiting to see, but I assume the 'thought of questions' where just questions from the envelopes presented in a different way.. and I assume applying dual realities on what the audience thinks he's doing and what the spectator is understanding he is telling them about their question. objects in the pocket I didn't see a clear method for.. unless its again people with questions in the envelopes again... there was a book test type as well (page from a spectators book that she had, page from it.. guessed the line she was looking at and what was on the cover) this was during the blindfold part of the q&a... I've see similar effect that was presented out at fism with objects and words from books (but they had a helper who was feeding) I'm struggling for possible solutions on that one.... the people I was with loved the show, and had some great ideas of how he did it (the standard method like.. he's just mental ) we hung around the stage door for a bit, but the queue was massive, and my fiancee had a rotton cold, and I didn't want her hanging round in the cold.. so we headed back to reading.. (i'll have to get my books signed another time) wonderful performance... some bold and sneaky moves in there as well.. excellent evening..!! |
