I just picked up Cutting up Touches by David Avadon.
This is a small hardcover book put out by Squash Publishing. The book is written about the history of Stage pickpockets. It has a small history about Giovanni, Gentleman Jack, Vic Perry, Dominque, Kasagi, Ricki Dunn and a number of others. Not only does this book give you a history of these stage thiefs, but also I believe will help with anyone trying to figure out what kind of act they wish to put together. And since most of our Magician pride themselves on knowing what comes from where, I believe it would be nice to have the same thing with pickpocketing. You can have your local shop order this book, or you can get straight from the publisher. http://www.squashpublishing.com Hope this sparks some conversation, as pickpockets don't enjoy spilling too much info. |

It is a decent read for an overview of various pickpocket entertainers that paved the path we now walk.
Aside from being a little biased towards Giovanni (his teacher), I felt Mr. Avadon's "Note" in parentheses on page 66 about Ricki Dunn's book "The Professional Stage Pickpocket" was distasteful. It stuck out immediately like a sore thumb.
I'm not just a magician, I'm an interpreter of Reality.
Underground, above ground, whatever. I don't need a label, thanks. |

I enjoyed reading through this book on two sunny afternoons, by the pool.
It was a relaxing, fun and easy read. Nicely written with some great insights into mind set and the performances of these top flight entertainers. Thanks David Avadon! Jonathan
