Dear All
I know there is another post about cards below, but I'd like to hear what brands other Australian magicians are using for general closeup and manipulation work. I'm just beginning to get into manipulation, but even at 38yo am finding it difficult due to my smaller hand size. Any suggestions? Can anyone outline the main differences btw bridge and poker cards and cards in general. Are they only made of either paper or plastic or different types of coatings? Any DVDs on beginning manipulation would be helpful too. I'll search through the other posts also. Thanks Andrew |

Bridge and Poker refer to the size of the card. Bridge is a bit narrower.

Thanks for the posts guys. I didn't know there were so many finishes. Do you need a particular finish to display fans well?

Andy,
I am quite new to magic as well. There are numerous brands/types of cards around. It appears that The United States Playing Card Company http://www.usplayingcard.com/ makes most brands/types any magician would use. I have some Tally-Hos at home, but after buying these have since decided to go with the original Bicycle Rider backs. The rider backs are available in a large range of gaffs, which can be useful. Most packet tricks I have seen come as rider backs. As far a finish goes: the rider backs are 'Air Cushion Finish' and the Tally-Hos are 'Linoid' Finish. I can't tell the difference. If you pop into a magic store you may find they have all the different brands for you to look at. The Magic Store in Melbourne has a wide range of cards. I intend to stick to the one brand, and try and keep a newish deck available at all times. I read somewhere that practising with old or poor quality cards can teach bad habits. Not sure how true that is, but older cards tend to stick, so any move must feel different. |
