Hello
I am a card worker, do mostly shuffled deck tricks. Now I reciently bought the ellusionist Red gaff deck, and I love the cards and effects but my feedback has been less than great. I do all the slights to make the trick enjoyable and get the gaff card to view and as soon as I do the slight with the gaff (ie pip matrix, king of diamonds) I get the " O " look, and well that must be a trick deck, no skill no magic, just lessened and all the hard slights before and to get that card are effected. Any thoughts? love the cards but I keeping them on the edge is way more fun. Thanks in advance |

I would imagine that, because the cards look so obviously gaffed (because they are), then they scream "TV Magic Cards" to laymen.
It takes some powerful presentational ability (not to mention stellar sleight-of-hand) to pull off an effect where the spectators can clearly see specially printed cards, and then try to convince them that it was all (or even any) sleight-of-hand with all regular cards. The most powerful use of gaffed cards is obtained using ones where the spectators have no idea the cards are even gaffed. In those cases, in their mind they saw regular cards at the start, in the middle and at the conclusion of the effect. This helps eliminate the possibility of "trick cards" in their mind. They don't even have to have so much as a rudimental idea has to how "trick cards" could accomplish an effect, all that matters in their mind, is that it could be "trick cards" and their mindset will hardly ever change. So when they see highly unusual cards that they have never seen before, their mind is already well down the path to "trick cards" and it is very difficult to get them off that train of thought.

It is a hard balance start with a gaff and they are trick cards, end with a gaff and all the previous tricks where trick cards and my sleight of hand skills are out the window. I just don't get it and 40.$$ for my own entertainment.
O maybe a younger audience? or just fooling around with friends? |

That's why it helps to learn good solid effects that you can do with a borrowed deck. They hand you their deck, you do a miracle or two with their cards and then you hand them back. They know their own cards are normal.

I agree with the above
my opinion is that gaff cards make tricks possible gaff cards should not be the trick into themselves EXCEPT when you are specifically going tricks for laughs I love joke cards - Presentation is everything though

I actually designed a routine around using one of the Blurry cards from the Gaff deck.
And I can't find them now, as I carried them separately. No one EVER thought about a gimmicked card. They all think I caused the blurrieness with pure sleight of hand. If you want the handling and idea, PM me. And if anyone isn't using their blurry cards... ...I'll pay you for them... -Aaron |

Well they are fun and slthought the cost is only 40$ but there is still fun to be had with them, sorry to hear so much spent on TT's, but I don't reget getting them they are fun.
I do like the gaffs they are fun to collect and fun for some tricks but I am finding them not for the more critical, burning eyes people more for the friends younger and for people who just want to have fun with magic. But I am glad to hear some other people are getting the same reaction. And Arron Ya I have some gaff I'm waiting to use before once I clean up my slights maybe it will be "possible" to the people -thanks |

I agree with Rociante. I've found that the best use of Gaffed cards is when the layman doesn't know that it has been used. In some cases, its like doing a card slieght with out the slieght. It also depends on your presentation and your audience though. I've performed tricks with gaffed cards and the audience flipped out with amazement and then the next audience didn't make a peep. So it really depends on how you want the trick to come across.

Shakes,
True so true;however, not making a peep does not mean they were amazed. perhaps they were speechless. I also agree if you can sneek in the gaffs after they have examined and shuffled the deck, it is stronger. For examplem ALDO does a nice effect called "Have a nice day" where a card is selected then signed and seen to be lost in the middle of the deck. 4 cards from top are removed, cleanly shown and a smiley face placed on one. After some clever counts, the smiley faces go from 1 to 4 then back to 1. It ends up being their signed card. Now, the trick is very visual and strong and normaly would not be done with an examined deck. Find a way to do it with a deck examined and shuffled, and you have an even stronger effect. |

I was playing with the card again same presentation, to a little younger audience, around 19 and I got a much better reaction. So still working at it and maybe an audience that is more open and more relaxed is better. All and all Im happy to get a better reaction. Still no running down the street screaming but I'm happy.
