Yeah what illustrators usually do is we start with photo reference and then we do the designs or the poster in the medium of choice to make it appear realistic. In a way art is very much like magic in that we as artists are folling the eye by creating reality out of paint, ink or other mediums we use.

There are 51 caricatures of magicians in a book titled "51 Magicians and a Faker"..I don't know the author or the publisher...sorry..

A possible reason it may be difficult to find the author is that the word in the title of the book is "Fakir", not "Faker" and the author is Angel Idigoras. It can be found by clicking here.
