I wonder if the tarbell course in magic is all a beginner might want since it covers much more ground then the books by mark wilson, harry lorayne or henry hay do?

Get it. Most of todays tricks are revamped versions of what is already in Tarbell. Study the books one at a time to get a feel for what direction you want to go. Each has a sampling of stage, parlor, and close-up. The tricks build on previous stuff to help you in the arts. He also gives business advice and performance advice.

Tarbell was originally designed to be a correspondence course in magic to beginners, so yes it covers all a beginner might want, there are, however some problems finding all the apparatus you might need to do all in tarbells, since it was written many moons ago. Harry Lorayne's book is excellent, as is Mark Wilson's. They certainly take differen't approaches. Mark is a more comprehensive manual directed to beginners, Harry's, well let's say once ur into magic, esp if ur into card magic, Harry's are the best. Henry Hay book is also good, though I think Mark or Tarbell's is better. You can bet an autographed copy of mark's directly from him at http://www.markwilsonmagic.com
If Harry still has some of his Magic Book in personal stock he will also auto it for you if you order it from him. He is a member of the forum, you can find his email under his screen name which is, duh, Harry Lorayne

Yup... get it! You'll be amazed at the number of items in current release that are simply reworkings of items originally taught in Tarbell.

Do be aware that the CD ROM version, which is simply the original correspondence course digitised, omits lots of stuff that people will tell you "is in Tarbell", by which they mean the book volumes.

Tarbell can make a man into a magician. Everyone should read it, along with Magic and Showmanship by Nelms.
