After a couple of years, it is time I changed up my act a bit. I'm keeping everything that is scripted so far, except the first trick. I play an Archeologist/Magician and my act is 45 minutes long. The first trick should be around 3 minutes long. What I would like to change is this opening routine.
Does anyone have any recommendations for an opener - something flashy, funny, and mystical for kids between the ages of 3 - 14? Some type of color changing something that may tie into world travel and exploration? The trick I am dumping is color changing CDs. Any help would be appreciated! Fineous

Looking about four (4) threads below this one would be a good start.

I like the character. The beginning of the show would be a good time to introduce the essential items that every explorer needs:
Indestructable rope (a cut and restored routine) A compass - (compass routine) A map - could start out as a blank silk because it is written in invisible ink. With some help from the kids the map becomes visible. I'm interested as to how the colour changing CDs fitted into the explorer theme. What was the idea behind the routine?

Kimmo - I tell the kids I need to put on some "world" music for the show, but I have so many, they need to help "color code" them. After the change, I play music from Africa, South America, etc...
Derrick - There are so many threads and messages here, I thought I would just start a new, more direct approach.

There's a great Vaudeville trick with a door (or a door-like screen) on the floor. At the beginning, you hear someone knocking on the door. Then the knob turns (it's oval so you can see it turning) and the door begins to open up. It opens up so that it is at a 90 degree angle with the floor and then a grappling hook is tossed up over the door and pulled back until it catches on the open edge of the door. Pretty soon your head appears and it seems that you are climbing up from beneath the floor. You make a big project of it, and when you are about half way up, you apparently get onto some stairs beneath the floor ("Why don't I just use the stairs? I didn't have to climb up all this way!). You climb up the stairs to the stage and close the door behind you. Then you lift up the door and slide it off into the wings, showing that there is no hole or trap door beneath the floor.
As described, you can perform this anyplace, but if you want to get really tricky, you might do it up on top of a platform so they can see beneath the door the entire time.

Going along the same discovery vein as Smartini...The Wilting Flower ala Steve Taylor (it's on his Fantastic Friends video). It's a terrific opener and gets them applauding right off the bat.
Or the same routine using Off the Meter as some kind of archaeological meter? DeWayne |

I like the idea of using the Off the Meter...would you change the face plate to something different?

The Off the Meter is a great idea. Like Smartini suggests, what should the face plate be used for in an archeological way? You still want kids yelling and clapping and stuff. Great act to open with...

Fineous,
The face of the meter is not labeled when purchased. Just 1 through 10. So I don’t think you have to label it. I don't know how true you stay to the science of Archeologist, but if you say it's a meter used for________. While your explaining it’s use, someone claps (a stooge). You notice that the clap registered on the meter. From there you can try a “spontaneous” experiment in clapping. Again I do not know if you are educating kids in archeology or just using it as a character premise. If it's a character (which I love), the meter can be anything you want. I do not know if Archeologist use any of these but here is a list of some common geophysical instruments and methods. Earthquake studies (study of the interior of the earth on a large scale). Fibrosis (artificially shaking the ground at low frequencies). Explosion waves with Georgine listening (determines travel time, bending, dispersion, and reflection of low frequency sound waves). Gravimeter (measures variations in the earth's gravity field attributable to sub- surface features). Magnetometer (measures variations in the magnetic field of the earth due to sub-surface features, especially ferrous materials). Resistivity Mapping, Induced Polarization Mapping, Electrical Potential Measurements, Earth Currents (mapping electrical conductivity in the earth). Metal detectors (induced electrical fields). Geiger counter and Scintillation counter (natural radioactive decay of certain earth materials). Neutron Activation (artificially induced radioactive emission). The more I think of this the more I think it may be a perfect opener for an "Archeologist". Because it will establish you as an Archeologist and a funny guy right off the bat. Best of luck! DeWayne |

Dewayne talks funny with that big word thing he does! But he is on to something.
You can say you have reason to believe that the missing link between man and ape is in this room. This machine measures the sound hand bones make when slapped together and voices make when screaming. If there is a missing link in the room, it will register 10! Unless you don't believe in evolution...then forget it. |

Fineous - Have you considered Mismade Flag? You could change the colors to flags of other countries during your routine ... I use the Japanese Flag here in Japan when they pull out the red and white silks ... then when they put the blue one in with the white and red I pull out the U.S. flags.
