I think we could agree that the "classic" animals used for magic are rabbits and doves, followed by ducks and some parrots, so... What other animals would you recommend for magic? Why do you think they work well? And do they have some advantage, as pets or show animals?
Thanks a lot! |

There are many topics in this forum concerning alternative animals. Within the last 6 months or so, these animals have been talked about. You might want to go through some topics and read what they say.

I've seen elephants and giraffes used in stage shows before. Their scat is bigger than my bunny though.
A bunny and a dove are quiet, beautiful, and somewhat uncommon. That's the ticket. I have cats, but they make noise, and who hasn't seen a cat in the last 24 hours? |

That's easy, just lay him on his side and accordion pleat the neat. When produced, he'll shoot up like a rocket

I'm currently researching ideas on how to use my bearded dragons (medium sized lizards) in a show.
For me, the advantagre is that we have handled these animals on a daily basis for years and so know their specific likes and dislikes and the ways each one will tolerate being handled. Plus since we do handle them daily, we have already built a significant amount of trust that will enable us to work with them and figure out the various possibilities. In addition to that, they are unique. How many people get a chance to see two foot lizards live in person? For us the draw back would be that they have very special travel requirements and if we are not doing shows within driving distance (which will be a while) we woudln't want to risk taking them because they have to travel in the cargo hold if flying and IMO, and our vet's, it's too risky unless absoulutely required. Therefore, I wouldn't design or routine any thing that would make or break my show around these guys. I try to think of them sort of like a flourish- it's nice to do and a little excitment, but I can still entertain w/o them.

You can add Ferrets to Dave's list, too.

I have seen sparrow productions and moth productions on the stage. The sparrows are not that effective because the they will fly out of view very quickly. The moth is not meant to be a moth, but a butterfly. You cannot control how the butterfly flies, but with lamps or something like that, you can direct the moth to fly to wherever you want. Months always fly to the light.

DoveLover, good idea, that of the moth. I have read about that before, and I think I'm gonna think about that. It could be interesting.
