I think this might be a good place to put this since everyone here offers such great advice. If it isn't I'll post it elsewhere.
Anyway, here's the thing. I do a bill to lemon routine and I'm looking for new ways to ask for people's $100 or usually $20, either way, I want a bill. I have been (for the past 2 years) bringing a male up to the stage and after some by-play asking if he has some money. When he takes out his wallet I grab it from him and say, "I know what I'm looking for." I got this idea from Michael Finney and always felt weird using it becuase I knew that it's his idea, but I just wanted to add a gag to getting the money. It works well for the most part, but was wondering what you guys do on stage? I just feel that there is something wrong with standing on stage and asking, "Does anyone have a 20 dollar bill I can borrow?" Thanks! Josh London P.S. If you feel this should be in another place, please let me know and I'll place it there, but since we all work from the stage in theater style shows I thought this might be the right place. |

Wow - unless your character can really support the action, I'd wouldn't advise grabbing a man's wallet out of his hands. True, it works for Finney, but his style of smart@ss comedy allows him to do that, and he doesn't do the routine until after the audience has become comfortable with him.
I am wondering if anyone has gotten a volunteer onstage only to find out that they have no cash on them? With more and more people using their debit/credit cards only, I have seen more instances here in the real world wherein people had no cash on them. |

My character does support the grabbing of a wallet and the effect is placed towards the end of my show so the audience already knows me.
I'm lucky as t not have anyone with no money. I'd be interested to hear what someone has done in that situation. Josh |

I've given a spectator money to hold on to (before the show) and instruct them that I will need it for a trick (and explain the reasons for giving the bill---people don't carry cash as often and so to avoid that problem this is your solution) Never had a problem yet

NO CASH! Then how'd you get in? I thought I was the one doing the tricks! Do you have any friend's here? Yes: Have they got the money? If it's No: "This man has no money and no friends! Lets find you some friends and me some money! Send him out on bill hunt!

Adam that's a great one!
I always just asked who would help on stage. I was doing bill in lemon Mark Wilson style, so I only needed $1. Never had an issue there, although that was 10 years ago when folks still carried cash 98% of the time if you asked me for a buck, I wouldn't have it cuz I'm one of those annyoing people that never carries cash anymore.

Speaking of people not having money, I encountered a similar situation:
I have a Wristwatch Blendo. I perform at summer resorts. Guess what I discovered? I have a killer prop, but people on vacation don't tend to wear watches! So here's my secret -- I leave the &%#* trick out of my act! Anyone who doesn't work resorts want to buy a great prop? |

I did a burnt and restored bill and asked people for a $100 bill and most of course did not have one. I jokingly got down to like $5 and said, "oh what the heck, here use mine". I gave them a $100 bill and went on with the trick. It got a lot of laughs when the guy returned to his seat with my bill in his pocket. I just followed him to his seat and asked for my bill back, "Please". It got a lot of laughs. After writing this down I might start doing the trick again, the audience really seemed to like it.
Thank you Steven |

This past weekend I performed the Bill to Lemon for a 4 night run. This is what I used:
"... Does anyone have a bill I can borrow? This is good with a 5 ok with a 10 but absolutely amazing with a 100" I always got a bill, only got one 100, but ultimately since I am having it signed I don't really care what the bill is. Matt

I usually get 20s for my routine but ALWAYS get something. Make sure the guy has cash before you bring him on stage.
