I don't remember Harry Anderson doing a cups and balls routine on a TV special however I do remember him doing the shellgame - I would have liked to see Harry Anderson do the cups and balls - because Harry Anderson is a great performer and what he does is commercial.
Perhaps if there is video on line somewhere someone may provide a link. Thanks in advance.

Hi James,
I don't think it was mentioned Daryl's one cup routine (a mug and borrowed bill) and Marc DeSouza routine (3 cups, Vernonessque in style). I don't know if they're in print but You can see Daryl's in vol. one of his Fooler Dooler sereies and Marc's in vol. 4 of Master Works series. Also I would add Mendoza's Chop cup. Ciao. |

Here you go Kent...
http://www.mrhypnotist.org/video/glennbishopcastle.wmv And here is a link to my commercial shellgame routine. http://www.mrhypnotist.org/video/shellgameglennbishops.wmv And here is a link to my commercial 3 card monte routine. http://www.mrhypnotist.org/video/glennbishop3monte.wmv Why do I do these things the way that I do them? Because they are commercial, solid - and stood the test of time - and the hardest performing conditions that there are out on the road in today’s show business world. That is the reason I use things like the punch cull because it works under the hard - real life performing conditions - like my triumph shuffle techniques - because it is commercial. There are some books on theory in magic but almost none on being commercial. Maybe I should write a book on the theory of being commercial. I hope this helps.

Thanks Lawrence O
When I started to do the cups and balls I started with an Adams plastic set. Then later on I used the sets we had at the old Marshall Brodien Magic Shop that was at Old Chicago Amusement Park - They were the old rings and things sets. My first set was a set of stainless steel rings and things cups. The first working routine I used was the Jim Ryan routine. Later On I did the Dai Vernon routine. To many magicians in Chicago did the Dai Vernon routine in the restaurants in Chicago in those days - so I took a few ideas from Jim Ryan and the Vernon routine and added a few of my own ideas and this was the start of this routine. After doing it a few years - I cut it down and changed it - kept in the highlights and the routine evolved into what I do today. The way that I was schooled in magic - was that the public has only time to watch the highlights. That is why my cups and balls - shellgame - chop dice cup - and three card monte routines - have shortened over the years. Just one of those things I learned - the way I was schooled in magic - growing up - and keeping my magic commercial I hope this helps.

Glenn:
Mike Brazill did not (to my knowledgel) issue any stainless steel cups when he had Rings and Things. However, he did issue some chrome plated steel cups, which were the ones that were known as the Bells of St. Mary's. The plating on the was so good that they never tarnished. They were probably the best cups made during that time, including the Paul Fox cups. Just a point of information.

Thanks Bill for the history. I was told when I got them that they were stainless steel. However learning from your post - they could not have been. They must have been the chrome plated steel cups then.
Thanks for the info Bill.

My collection of routines is way too long to be listed here.
I added a three cups routine using metallic balls with a script about the Inquisition burning C&Bs performers. On the chop cup front I also committed a routine dealing with the traditional tea ceremony. Both are heavily influenced with the In Transit Actions misdirection concept developed by Arturo Ascanio. For safe keeping, these were entrusted to Bill Palmer. Please also consider in your list that there are routine of cups and balls performed with especially printed playing cards (ask our Indian friends)
