Hello all,
My name is Bryan. My company is starting production on several instructional DVDs soon. Off and on, I may need some help finding the originator of an effect. I wish to give proper credit to the source. The effect I wish to get credit reference for is using a thumb tip to rip off the corner of a bag of M&M's eating some of the candy and then resealing the corner to the bag. I'm going to be producing a DVD specifically at teaching street effects with a thumb tip. I'm including this effect in that DVD, and probably in a separate unrelated DVD. Hoping someone will be able to help me out. I want to give the person responsible the credit they deserve for this marvelous effect. Bryan New School Magic

You may also want to ask their permission to include the effect on your DVD.

That's part of the plan. First step in the process is to find out who I have to ask permission from, so I'm hoping someone out there can help. I've seen the effect distributed, but I've never seen a reference to the originator of the effect.

Hello Bryan,
I seem to recall an effect like that in the book "Miracle Material" by Michael Kaminskas. I could be wrong because it goes a ways back for me, but you could check there for your research. Hope it helps, Matt |

That title rings a bell with me, as well.

I've been doing this effect for a looong time. It was one of the first non-card/coin items I actually learned.
I don't do it too often; it's just a fun, quirky little side piece. Anyway, I can't for the life of me find out where it originates. I've looked thru every book and manuscript I own, and I can't find it! It's actually quite frustrating. Bryan, if you find out, will you let us know ASAP please? chr!s

I definitely will update everyone once I find out anything. So far, it seems as if it's been around long enough that I may not even run into any problems with crediting the source. I remember learning it a few years ago off of some bootleg CD the shady owner of the magic shop I used to go to sold for $9.99.

This is defitiely from Michael Kaminskas' book Miracle Material. The title of the effect is candy caper. If you are still wishing to contact him for permission to use it on your dvd, his contact info is here...

Yea but there seems to be countless ways of getting around copy righted material. Don't be a hack and swap the M&M bag for a bag of Skittles or Reeses Pieces and tell everyone you came up a new trick. Part of Magic's mystique and charm is remembering past magicians and giving homage to the ones that came before us.
