I have been looking at a mental epic type effect in which the three predictions appear on the back of a slate, handwritten and in a different color from the audience's three choices.
Can anyone comment on the strength of this effect, limitations, etc.? Thank you. Gianni |

This is a prop made by Ted Lesley, who is on this forum, so I hope he'll chime in.
I saw one a few years ago. It looks something like a European menu board -- a green surface with red lines across it, and a frame of blond wood. Pretty ordinary looking, especially in Europe or in a presentational context that justifies it. It is a platform type effect, due to the angles involved; you have to be a certain distance from your viewers. I'm sure Ted L. can tell us about this aspect. I found the "hidden construction" aspect of the slate a bit flimsy, but perhaps this has been improved since then. As for the effect, it seems like a real knockout. Hank Lee sells the prop for $175, and Ted Lesley sells it direct on his web site. As a side note, a Ken Brooke slate that accomplishes pretty much the same effect (by a completely different method) just went on e-Bay for $1,400 or so! Jerry |

I saw this effect several years ago at a convention and I think its very good. Strong impact.
http://www.wonderworkshop.de/ TEXT FROM HIS WEB: Stanley Palm´s und Ted Lesley´s SLATE - SATIONAL Store away your "Mental-Epic" because now you can get "SLATE-SATIONAL" again: A devilish gimmicked blackboard, which was sold in a limited edition by the late Richard (Dick) Himber around the fifties. Ted Lesley has gone with a new construction one step further: THE SLATE CAN BE HANDLED BY THE SPECTATORS FREELY WITHOUT FEAR OF DETECTION OF THE PREPARATION ! THIS WAS NOT POSSIBLE WITH HIMBER´S VERSION! The American master mentalist Lee Earle wrote a raving review of this incredible mystery in a recent "Vibrations", the monthly newsletter of the Psychic Entertainers´ Association. The effect in brief is as follows: One side of the huge slate (approximately 20 by 18 inches) is coverd with newsprint. The performer explains, how easy it is to read someone´s mind, but that tonight he is going to make the audience read the mindreader´s mind!Three spectators (no stooges) are asked to choose for example: A name of a country; A governement official; and A date. The performerprints in front of the audience on the slate the three chosen words.Instantly the paper is ripped off from the other side and the spectators see, that the three spectators have successfully read the mentalist´s mind, because the same words are written on the other side! Further proof of this fact is also, that the mentalist has written in longhand with white chalk and the messages on the other side are printed in red chalk ! Many more routines with this beautifully handcrafted prop are possible. The slate is a common object again because it looks exactly like the ones, restaurants use for advertising their "daily specials"! The surface on both sides. is forest green with red lines, and the frame is made out of hardwood. Each slate comes in a felt-carrying-bag. Ted Lesley is doing the trick mostly in trade shows with great success. Even versed mentalists and magicians are fooled by the diabolically clever piece of apparatus. The handling is very deceptive and easy so the performer can concentrate entirely on presentation. |

I not only use Slate-Senational in my trade shows BUT I have blown many a knowledgable magician out of the water with it too. The main imporvement Ted made over Richard Himber's original (which wasn't actually his anyway but he did manage to claim it) is that the slate is locking SO from the audience perspective, your participant is the one that does all the writing too and you just stand to the side. The participant rips off the newspaper that is on the back and reveals the message, so it appears that you have done nothing that could have done any dirty work.
It is made with a working performer in mind so that there is only one small thing that could possibly break and can be repaired in about 10 seconds with nothing special. I highly recommend it. PSIncerely Yours, Paul Alberstat |

Actually, isn't it the case that the mentalist does all the writing? At the end, the spectator does rip off the newspaper, but that's the extent of his involvement with the board. Is this right, Paul? Thanks! Jerry |

No Patrik,
You are mistaken. While the performer appears to write the time and place of the performance, it appears that the participant does all the writing, which is what really blows away the magicians as well as the ones that try to reconstruct it.
