First of all, this book gets an extremly high recommendation! Not only will you find some first class magic but, you will learn life lessons. I could write pages but this is the condensed version.
I got this book because I had seen some of Wayne's television performances when I was a younger. When reflecting on those moments, more than anything, I remember him as being a true performer. I was hoping to find some of his dynamite stage material and I was not disappointed. Although most of the effects are more suited to smaller groups. This was the first time I read any of his material the book was nothing like I expected. It said 40 practical routines. They certainly are practical as in ease of performance but many of them are not FASDIU, or impromptu borrow decked effects; the title may be misnomer in that sense. Do not let that discourage you. This is book of effects; and not sleights. I believe that is a value and not a detractor. No doubt, you will find an impressively diverse range of effects. After reading through the effects, I discovered numerous gems and true showstoppers that are designed to make your performance memorable. Considering many of these are marketed effects, you receive an incredible value for the price. Tossed out deck, mentalism, cards, comedy, and nearly every effect has solid audience participation. My favorites are: a variation of a Karrel Fox routine called "Echo" where the spectator becomes the magician. There's tons of funny dialogue as the magician guides the spectator while the Spectator vanishes a signed card vanishes AND finds it in an impossible location. "Chews a card" is a bare handed card stab that has a slick method and good misdirection. Wayne Dobson's writing is clear, succinct, and easily understandable. The cleverly structured effects leave plenty of room for theatrical presenations and make it easy adopt these effects to your own style. Then, came the true GOLD; his autobiography. I didn't know much about Wayne and once I started reading I finished the whole thing without stopping. When is the last time you could say that about a magic book? The descriptive stories are just as good as the magic. Wayne has performed in nearly every venue is and there is doubt his record is ranks up there with any pro. Wayne has gone through a ton of sh-- before he became famous and had his own television show. I truly respect his relentless perserverance as he went though grimy gigs and shady business relations. By no means is this a dry recitation of events. You will laugh out at his anecdotes about failures and tough times. Along the way you will meet and visualize color characters that provide a rich background for his stories. The autobiography takes you up to current times when he describes his experiences living with Multiple Schlerosis. It certainly hasn't slowed down his happiness, social, or professional life as he lectures, performs and cherishes life to the last drop! In my opinion, that's more important that creating any sleight and this makes WD40 a unique book that deserves your attention. There are many outstanding effects, a hysterical, candid, and well written autobiography that shows how life is what you make of it. Hecklers, divorce, magic, showbizness, serious illness, and failures So buy this book, and get to meet Wayne Dobson yourself. It's a real experience with one of magic's legends. Magic Mike |

I can also highly recommend this book. I read it completely in one night as well. I just coudnt stop once I started. I especially enjoyed the second part, autobiography.
If I would have to find one negative aspect about this book, it would be that there really isn't any illustrations in the trick section of the book or description of the effect. Dobson has also in most cases with held his presentations from the tricks to keep explanations shorter. Some people might miss a lot of really strong magic because explanations are rather short. Its hard to realise how awesome the most material in the book is, until you get totally fooled by it when you see some other magician, or maybe Dobson himself, do em live. I am lucky and I have seen Dobson use some of these live and made me realise how strong the tricks are. They are actually so strong than some of them are allready sold as dealer items for like 40-50$ a trick! And with this book you can make most immediately at home. Highly recommended. J-M |

Can someone advise me as to what routines are new in this book that weren't already published in the 3 Dobson's Choice booklets?
