Now that the Summer heat and humidity have started, the Chesapeake region resembles life in a gym sock.
For me, one of the most irritating results is that cards behave in noticably different ways in the sultry Chesapeake Summer. Doubles won't lay flat, curling like those cellophane "fortune telling fish". Faro's become unpredictable. Palmed cards turn as soft and floppy as Dali's clocks. One solution (one that I would only consider as a last resort) might be to switch to the detestable "Kems". Does anyone else have problems in the steamy Summertime?

I think you just used two or three of the best metaphors/similes/whatever that I've ever seen on this board!

Well, I live in a counry below sea-level and I think it wouldn't make much difference if we were actually on the bottom of the sea. Most of the time it's raining, but in the summer it's hard to even breathe sometimes. Or it's raining, of course.
I have the same problems with my cards, but my hands are even worse. If it's really hot I really can't do a double lift and if I manage to do one, it almost sticks to my hands. I don't like summertime. Cards won't do what they're told and way too many bugs around.

I live in a equatorial country that is humid all year round. I'm not sure that I actually face the problems that you stated. I always keep my cards in a box and make sure they're in good condition.
If I were to leave the cards out for a few hours openly, there is a chance that the cards will warp a little, usually, the top most card will warp because it's the most exposed. I realised that everytime I left them lying around openly, their condition deteriorates a lot faster than if I were to pack them in their box after usage. Additionally, I only use them indoors and not outdoors where it's hot and humid. I think you can probably expect to wear your cards out much faster because of the weather. |

Well, I live on the Sun and while we have no problems with humidity, I can't keep a deck of cards around for more than a second - let alone flash paper. It's embarrassing, frankly.

Wow..Salvadore Dali made a posting in The Magic Café. (very cool)
You could use Silica Gel packs found in shoeboxes and vitamin jars and just tape them to the bottom or flap of the card deck. If the packs are too large open them up and wrap the crystals in cheesecloth. (It is a custom made card deck dehumidifier.) ~John |

I live in Taiwan, and as many of you may know, it is humid and hot all year long basically. The average temperature these days is like 35!
A good way to "prevent" cards from warping is by using card guards. In my opinion, they are the best way to go. One way to prevent the cards sticking is by washing your hands (if possible) prior to a performance. This is because in addtion to the moisture in the cards, there is already a lot of it in your hands. Best, Charles

Not only humidity but when you have cards out on a plane. Later when you try to use the cards again they are warped from the cabin pressure. I hate it when that happens!

The summer is too sticky.
The winter is too dry. That leaves something like 3 days a year that are just right for card work. The obvious solution is to take up coins - except trying to execute perfect faros with half-dollars always cramps my hands. Oh well. There's always Corinda's 13 Steps.... |

I had a packet of about 6 cards sitting on my windowsill for a few days and forgot about them. I was cleaning up the other night and saw them. Needless to say the cards were fairly warped.

I tell you what when I got my first Masters bicycle deck, I got so mad cause I left them in the car for half an hour, and they were warped sooo bad...
Well silly me, I decided to put them in the fridge to see if it would help... (don't laugh at me) Well it didn't, and I was pretty ticked for a while. Parking in downtown San Diego, CA = 75cents/hr Masters Deck = 3.99 Used 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix = $5,500 Getting a Card Guard to prevent future warping = priceless
...for the 51st time... that is NOT my card...

I think I remember hearing that Tally Ho No 9 cards were originally designed for high humidity conditions. They seem to work better than other brands in the summer, but that could just be because I am partial to these cards.

I left my sense of humor out on the window sill overnight...and in the morning it, too, was warped.
Of course, it was that way *before* I put it on the window sill.

I find that a deck lasts for several hours even in high humidity. In order to make the deck like new, I ribbon spread the humid cards overnight in an air conditioned room and they dry out nicely for use the next day.
As far as KEMs or Copags are concerned.....They too get sticky from swetty hands...and in genral, I hate them....just use 2-3 decks and keep them in air conditioning as described overnight and you should be good to go the next day !
