Hi - I know very little (or nothing!) about hypnotic techniques.
But I do have some CD's by Paul McKenna for deep relaxation, confidence, change your life in 7 days ... The deep relaxation one is very good. Will studying hypnosis mean I am less likely to respond to these CD's? Will it demystify the process? WIll it mean my attention is occupied with analyzing the inductions rather than ... just letting go ...? Or will the opposite happen? Will I become better at self-hypnosis? Please keep the answers brief, if you can, because I know this is perhaps a complex topic.

No, actually you are MORE trained to enter the state so it is easier.
As for your last post I have no idea.

Ha ha.
Well, I already have a degree in psychology and am going for a Masters in psychological research methods - I got into the subject in order to become a stage hypnotist (I was young and full of wild ambition!). My goals have changed somewhat. But hypnosis is one topic that never came up on my course! I've got a couple of books here and there, but have been putting off reading them for fear of not being able to get the most from my CDs.

But hypnosis is one topic that never came up on my course! My goals have changed somewhat since then, so hopefully I'll resist temptation. I've got a couple of books here and there, but have been putting off reading them for fear of not being able to get the most from my CDs. The only reason I want to know about it is ... just so I know and can stop wondering and guessing. Now I just need to find time to learn about it ... Thanks people for your kind advice. Any more comments still welcome ....

Once you learn hypnosis is not an altered state of consiousness but rather a naturalistic phenomena, and that all hypnotic phonmena occurs is everyones daily life apart from hypnosis you will be demystified. And you will recognize daily trance phenomena in yourself and others, and find it much easier to enjoy hypnosis yourself. So yes, it will take away the mystery (that need not be there anyway) and yes, it will make you more "susceptable" even though that word is about as accurate as "altered state" is.....

Actually the above realizaion made it even more mystifing to me...
Just because something becomes an every day occurance doesn't mean its less mystifying. There are so many miracles around us that we don't appreciate because we percieve them as "everyday". I still think there is a place for the "altered state" label... |
