As mentioned - read the threads. If you are new to mentalism, then just get it, you won't be sorry.
Along with Modern Coin Magic for coins and Royal Road to Card Magic for cards these are probably STILL the essential reading matter for begginers. Howard - I just got it for Christmas (and have the other two as well!). |

Corinda 13 Steps is considered by many mentalists one of the fundamental books of the art (with Annemann's Practical Mental Effects)

If you are new to mentalism, it might be a good idea that the *only* book on the subject that you possess is Corinda' "13 Steps", so that you can thoroughly master the basic techniques described there, and to do a small-scale mentalism show (maybe to friends or some group you're a member of) based purely on what you have learned in that book. As the Amazing Fogel says in his interview in that book, your show should be no longer than fifteen minutes of the strongest effects you have mastered. (Less is definitely more, and a mentalism show can *very easily* outstay its welcome.)
Then, after having done a handful of such shows and gained some awareness of how audiences respond, start looking at the other literature, which makes more sense in the context of having mastered Corinda and actually perfomed some mentalism. It's almost a drawback that there is *too much* mentalist literature out there for the beginner, excellent though a great deal of it is. Once you get into the habit of collecting the books and videos and equipment before you've actually performed any of it, it seems as if you're drowning in a sea of material and the temptation is to become an "armchair mentalist", reading about it, debating the theory, watching the videos and shows, contributing to net talkboards and so on, but not actually performing a show. |

Wise words from Dr.Omni, also if you are serious about mentalism check this thread:
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......5&11 Like Dr.Omni said, don't buy any more stuff besides Corinda. The 13 steps has material to last a very long time. Don't just read it, study it. When you first read it, you may think it's a bit dated, but you can adjust most of the effects in there to some modern presentations, just use your imagination! Study it, you won't regret it |

As a side topic, does anyone know what Tony Corinda was like as a performer? Given this book's status, it'd be interesting to know.
It's sometimes said that TA Waters, the author of that other colossus of mentalism -Mind, Myth and Magick- was much more effective as a writer and thinker than on stage. BB |

As far as I know, BB, he was a good performer as well. That's what I heard from those whom I've spoken to, that know him. Apparently he was a mean man in his younger days, I don't know if he has energy left for it now. I heard some funny stories that he used to call for a cab and then rip apart a 20 and say that he get the other half when he comes back out, because he had something to do. Then he went out the backdoor and left the cab waiting with one half of a 20
But as I said, as far as I've heard he was a good performer as well as a genius.

Tony Corinda's main occupation was as a dealer in magical supplies (he had a magic shop in London in the 1950s), and his performances were more of a sideline. From what I heard, he had some bad experience which caused him to break off all connection with the magical world for many years. Although still living in Essex, he actively discouraged attempts by fans to contact him.
"13 Steps" is such a masterpiece that it makes one very curious about its author and his life story. Last November, it was announced that he was going to be interviewed by Andy Nyman at the annual International Magic assembly in London, if his health permitted. I wasn't able to make that weekend, and have heard nothing about any interview since. I assume that he was unable to attend the event through ill-health. Does anyone have any news on that? |

Yes, his health didn't allow him to attend the convention, sadly enough.

Dr Omni,
Sadly, Mr Corinda failed to make the International Magic convention and so the interview never took place. People were requested to e-mail questions in to Andy and according to Martin MacMillan at I.M those questions would still be forwarded. There are definitely some wonderful stories about Tony Corinda and Vision has mentioned just one. Unfortunately, as you mention, he tends to be fairly reclusive in respect to 'the magical world' but being an old family friend of the MacMillan's, maybe one day they'll coax him out to join us! We live in hope! Best Regards HarryX  |

Thanks for that info. When you read about, for instance, the spririt and ghost effects described in "13 Steps", you sense that there's a wealth of interesting anecdotes in Tony Corinda's life story that have so far remained unknown to the wider magic community. I hope that he or someone close to him will produce a biography or autobiography of some sort, even if it's just a single article.

I, for one, would echo the thoughts of Dr.Omni. It's almost suprising that some sort of biography hasn't already been attempted.

"13 Steps to Mentalism" is a great book and Corinda has a great sense of humour. However, I would like the index to be better, but hey, that´s just a detail, so if I should rate the book it would get a straight A .

PMJI,
but I've just finished 13 steps and as a neophyte, I found it fascinating. Before that I read Ted Lesley's Paramiracles and I've just started Pure effect. The contrast in approaches and styles is quite startling. However, does anyone know where I could find Tony Corinda's billet pencil? I've looked for ages and can't find one anywhere. It looks pretty useful - not just for billets either! Ta! Mike |

everybody who likes magic should read this book.

Mike -
I have a billet pencil I bought some years ago from Al's Magic Shop. It was marketed, evidently, by "Jan's Magical". I made one once with a mechanical pencil. So I think they are around somewhere, but can also be made by hand. |

Corinda's book is one of the 2 cornerstone of mentalim with the Anneman's book: Practical Mental Effects.
Aiming to become the only magician in the world that has ever produced the lost socks back from the dryer...
