He is not playing on Broadway, He is playing off-0ff broadway. The only mentalist to play a Broadway theatre in the last decade is Marc Salem. He amy also be the only one period. Gerry McCambridge played in an off Broadway venue.

Actually, I'm playing in an Off-Broadway theater (199 seats). Over the last two years the show has moved through two Off-Off-Broadway locations and is now in its second Off-Broadway location. It is nice to have an address in Times Square on Broadway and share a home with the historic production of Perfect Crime (almost at 9,000 shows and counting), but it's still a long way from being on Broadway. What I have is a nice little show. Come and see it if you get a chance.

With the exception of Lance Burton (and I don't know exactly what his agreement is with the Monte Carlo) all Vegas shows are 4 wall productions, or at best, 2 wall.
For anyone that doesn't know what Riley and I are writing about, a 4 wall production is someone that goes in and rents the theater. This means that you provide the production, do all the marketing and get to keep all the profits after paying the rent. All Riley pointed out, the profits can be greater, but so are the risks of losing money. A 2 wall agreement is where the casino provides the theater and some marketing money, and the producer provides the show and the rest of the marketing budget. The profits are then split between the two parties. There are some headliners, like David Copperfield, whose shows are brought into the showrooms by the casino, but this has become rare. In NYC, all productions are in essences 4 wall, unless the show is being produced by a theater company that has their own space or by a producer has the lease on a theater. It sounds like Sam is self producing. It is a rough road to take, but it looks like he is doing it well. I look forward to seeing the show soon. I have heard very good things about it. Get your lazy *** over to a show. I am not performing in the lobby of your building. In answer to the speculation, yes. I am 4 walling it. I've kept the show running for close to 2 years with one or two shows a week. I began in a very modest setting (low expense) and have moved up as the audience and opportunities justified it. The current address (50th and Broadway) doesn't come cheap and it is a full-time job bringing in the audience, but as Riley and Todd have said, both the rewards and risks are entirely mine.

I will add that all the materials and the marketing Sam has done for this show have been first rate and a class act. I am certain the show is of the same quality.

Sam - how long does your show run? I'll be in NYC 3/15 and have evening plans at 8:15 PM at Bar Boulud on B'way btw 63rd and 64th. Can I swing attending your 5:00 show (if tix are still available) and still footin' it up to 63rd/64th in time for dinner?
(BTW - my high interest expressed in this post does not necessarily equate to my attendance - would need to convince the better half.) |

Saw Sam Eaton's Quantum Eye show yesterday in Manhattan, and got the chance to meet briefly with him as well. Sam put on an excellent show - my wife's jaw was continuously dropping (as was mine quite frequently). For a hobbyist/performer-to-friends-and-co-workers/hopeful-working-mentalist-one-day such as myself, watching Sam was a great experience. I was familiar with some effects/methods, had no clue about many others. Of the few I knew, he put a very nice spin on things that kept the presentation fresh for the audience. He used a variety of fun "reveals" that elevated the "wow factor" of many effects. He also did a switch on ME that I didn't notice (later that night when it hit me, I was like "Argghhh - he got me!"). One of the many things I got out of Sam's show was his great use of audience participation as misdirection. Definitely will incorporate this "principle", if/when I have an act to do so. Also, I really liked his performance style. Light and fun, well-paced, kept the audience engaged. He made it clear near the end that he was not a mind reader but an entertainer. This type of "disclaimer" has been talked about quite a bit on this board, and I'm in the camp that it's the right and ethical thing to do. Finally, it was great getting a chance to speak to Sam - a true gentleman. He talked frankly about the business side of things, how he's kept a show running for almost two years now and the real value of keeping it going. For any NYC-area hobbysist or working mentalist who wants a nice night (well - early evening) out and a chance to see nuances of a true pro, I can't recommend checking out Quantum Eye enough! ECU |

Sam I love the site and the music. It has a really nice vintage, vaudeville, feel to it. Reminds me of a silent movie. Keep up the good work!

I saw the show on Saturday night, in the compnay of Ian Rowland (an old friend) and Todd Robbins (who I'd never met previously), bumping into our own just-married David Meade in the lobbby after.
Sam has a gentle stage presence, banters well with his volunteers, and was good with the several little kids who he got onstage. There were some technical difficulties (new guy on light/sound), but Sam handled them well. I've seen some performers get really annoyed and thrown off by such things, but Sam laughed them off and kept the show moving. See it of you can! And I spoke for a little bit with Sam afteward, and he's a very nice guy. He doesn't have one of those crazy showbiz egos; he's very down to earth and nice to chat with. Be well, Sam (et al). Rory
