Hey all...well, I just got off the phone with a reporter for the Maryland Independent. Thanks to my fabulous sister-in-law, they want to do a story on me.
Turns out, she faxed over several press releases on my behalf, and now they're coming out Wednesday with a photographer and everything. Seriously, I just want to say thanks to those that have helped me, or just gave me some confidence when I needed a boost. Seems now all my hard work is starting to pay off...only thing is, this is just the beginning. Thanks so much, Steve P.S. If I could, I'd buy you ALL a round of drinks! |

Steve -
Here is some more encouragement - I send out a single press release to 3 TV stations and a newspaper. 1 TV station picked up on it and in 2 weeks I booked over a grand worth of hypnosis sessions because of that single thing. Get ready to get busy! One thing I will say is this - have a focus for the article and make sure it comes across in the interview. Here is an idea I just came up with off the top of my head. See if you can rent a large room at a local public library for a single afternoon. Then get together 3-4 simple tricks you can teach the kids and hold a Summer Magic Camp for children ages blah-blah on blah. Charge $25 for the event that includes a free blah. Give them you're number to contact them and go from there. I'd bet you get a dozen or so kids to show up and make some money, plus get good PR, and all those Kids and Parents there to talk good about you and how you should do little bobby's next birthday. Just an idea and best of luck. Tim |

Hi Steve,
I have done it several times. Just keep in mind to be yourself, be releaxed and be a true professional. Have a few tricks ready and set so you can perform and show them something. They may not ask you, but given the opportunity, I would offer to. The reason is that if you can get a great reaction from them, they WILL write about it in the article as they witnessed your magic first hand. It certainly is one way to win them over (so to speak). You will probably be asked standard questions like: - How did you get sarted in magic? - What type of magic do you do? etc. Keep in mind you may also get asked questions you think are rather silly so be prepared with a nice comical answer for them that is funny and proper but still remains as a professional. - How did you do that? - Can you make my taxes vanish? - Can you pull a rabbit out of the hat? These are sometimes brought up cause chances are the reporter has never interviewed a magician before. So just be prepared with some nice witty and fun answers for those. Most of all be sincere and show the passion for the art. Do not belittle any other magician and be true to yourself. If you can try and show them your love for the art and treat it as an artform. Try to let them know that magic is not about fooling people as it is entertaining them. Hope this helps. Kyle

You may even be asked about what you think about this magician or that magician. Don't get caught there. Be prepared with answers to these questions. Please do not make any negative comments about them. This is the tricky part many get caught unaware.

The interview went good...glad it's over. The photographer got some good pics too. Mainly one of me springing the cards which looks really kool.
She asked me about Blaine and Angel. Seriously. I said they were good at what they do, just I don't watch them. I don't want it to influence my style of magic. Thanks for all the advice everyone! I'll scan it and put it on my site when it's all said and done... Thanks! Steve |

Hey all. This is the newspaper article that was written about me. I don't have a scanner now, but I'm going to try to scan it shortly. Enjoy!
------------------------------------- Something up his sleeve Teen magician wows 'em at Red Robin By Sara K. Taylor Steven Simmons likes showy, flashy magicians such as David Blaine and Criss Angel well enough. "[Blaine] is good at what he does," Simmons said. "But stage magic is not my style. I have fun interacting with the audience." (took what I said out of context). Simmons, 17, is the House Magician at Red Robin in Waldorf. From 6:30 to 8:30 pm Fridays, he is performing sleight-of-hand effects for customers and, he hopes, entertaining them. "He's good with the guests," said Elizabeth Donegan, manager of Red Robin. "He has nice tricks, and the guests seem to enjoy him a lot." Steven strives to showcase new effects (he doesn't call them "tricks", saying, "Tricks sounds like something a little kid would do."). "Everybody's seen Uncle Harry do pick-a-card trick at Thanksgiving," he said. "I'm trying not to get that image. I'm already young." His age is something he works against, Steven acknowledged. But he is no novice. The magic bug first bit him when he spent a brief stint in Childrens National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He was 8 when a magician visited the hospital. As soon as he was released, Steven started visiting magic shops and picking up pointers from longtime practitioners. He started out with trick decks but soon tossed them aside for a regular deck of cards and added to his repitiore using scarves and foam balls in his act. He always carries a deck of cards with him and practices new routines relentlessly until they become second nature. His parents, John and Laurie, were his first audience and often are sounding boards for new effects. "He keeps us entertained here at home," said John of the youngest of his three sons. While studying at North Point High School to become an electrician, Steven really wants to break into performing magic at private parties, corporate meetings, and trade shows. "I want to keep my options open," said Steven, who also races dirtbikes as a hobby. Steven is quick to point out that he isn't doing "real magic"; he focuses on sleight-of-hand. And he isn't in the game to make people loo foolish; he is strictly an entertainer. "It's not about fooling people. It's about entertaining them," Steven said. "A good entertainer pretty much brings out the kid in everyone, and magic can do that." ------------------------------- Thanks for reading everyone. I'm going to try to scan it in a week or so, then I'll post the link to my website. Comments welcome, feedback appreciated. Best, Steve |
