I am working on a Jay Scott Berry effect and need to light flash paper or lighter fluid soaked cotton without using a match. I am poor and need something or some way to do so.

I am not familiar with the effect and the conditions under which you need to light.
But if you go to Wallgreens, you can get a "windproof lighter" which is essentially a little electric coil powered by AA cells. It is about $2.99 and you can hack it up to put the coil tip on a "raven type device" and have a switch somewhere else. Or you can make a far simpler device which is a variation of the "produce a lit match" but you don't produce the match, just enough fire to set off your paper or cotton. This could be held between an index finger and thumb, and with a "snap" of the fingers you have fire. PM me if you want more specifics on this approach. Just a couple of quick thoughts.... BroDavid

Get any normal cheap lighter, about 30c from a shop. Drain it fully then cut off the top of it. This will just give you the flint and steel part. Tie some elastic to it and make a pull and hey presto, spin the wheel with your thumb to make the spark then let the pull go.

Rick Haslet has a full line of flash paper ignitors—all the demos are available on his website http://www.ahouseoffire.com
However, I wish I could tell you they are "cheap"... |

Tannen's magic makes a thumb tip with a flint wheel attached. You fill it with flash cotton and a little sparkle additive, spin the wheel and magic. These aren't cheap either, around 25 bucks, but they are the best I've seen. It's the only thing I still buy from this once lustrous now horrid place.

I forget the name of these things but they are essentially some tissue paper with some powder inside. They pop (explode) on contact. They are real cheap and the box costs less than a buck. I picked some up in Chinatown in San Francisco last time I saw them. I imagine they would ignite flash paper if you don't mind the pop sound.

If I may, the little poppers that were just mentioned do not work for flash paper.
They just make a pop. NO, not even if you use several at once... just a louder pop. Save your money, Jim

Greetings...
Try rigging up model rocket ignitors, available at some hobby shops... small, cheap, easy to use (ignitied via electric current from battery... not reusable, but they come in packs)... More about these can be found in some of the other threads here under Up in Smoke! |

I have a wand made from 1/2 inch pvc pipe. It holds a lit cigarette or punk in the end. Low tech but very reliable. If your doing close-up the smoke might be a problem. I use it on stage.
P.S. I would be very careful cutting or taking disposable lighters apart. They are never completely empty! |

Keven,
If you have not received an answer yet, are you even getting the coil to glow? Maybe your batteries are dead. Your wire may be too long to get the current to flow with any real amps. Try a nine volt. Jim

If you are "permitted" to touch the paper with your wand, you can make an igniting wand from a barbecue lighter (I get mine from the dollar store). Cover it up with Crayola modeling compound (keeping the trigger and adjustment lever open) and make the wand look like a branch, maybe with a dead leaf or two still attached (dollar store- autumn leaves). If you can afford two barbecue lighters, you can extend the length of the wand by pulling off the metal tube of the second lighter and attaching it to the first (plus the gas line and igniter wire). It's not that difficult compared to what you tried with the Wallgreen lighter.
