I had actually posted most of this presentation earlier in Good, Bad, and Ugly... but afterwards, realized I probably should have posted it here instead, so here you go...
With a decent presentation, Reality Twister can be very impressive. However, I must admit that making my own twisted pens has added greatly to the effect (thanks to Michael Sibbernsen for giving me advice on that). What has worked really well for me is first doing a different trick with a non-twisted Bic pen, and then following up with Reality Twister using an identical looking (although twisted) pen. For example, I'll do a trick with a Steve Banachek's Psychokinetic Pen (which uses a Bic Stic) by making it fall off of their own hand... which allows them to have actually handled the un-twisted pen. Then, while they're freaking out about that trick, I quickly hand them the lens from Reality Twister and ask them to hold it for a moment while I talk about projection lens technology used in WWII in the Philadelphia Experiment for cloaking naval ships (I exchange the PK Pen for the twisted Bic pen while they're looking at the lens). I explain how the experiment went horribly wrong and that men and machinery became disfigured. While they're observing the vanishing pen underneath the lens, I continue on with a bit of extra patter about government conspiracy and cover-up. At the end of the trick, when they finally see that the same Bic pen (as far as they know) that they held in their hands in the previous trick has become twisted by the lens, I can almost guarantee a full blown jaw drop.... even from adults. The cool thing is, making your own twisted Bic pens is extremely cheap to do, so I always let the spectator keep the twisted pen (thanks again to Michael for the idea) which really puts the icing on the cake. They get to take a bit of twisted reality with them (and it even writes)! By the way, for those interested in making their own twisted pens, go ahead and PM me and I'll be glad to share the technique. The way I do it now is a bit less refined than Michael's method, but after you mess up maybe a pen or two, you'll get the hang of it and you'll be crankin' 'em out very quickly. Leo Martin

What would happen if you told them to hold onto the pen cap, did the 'twist' twice, then showed them that the pen got twisted?
ie, the MIDDLE of the pen got all twisted around the end because they were holding onto that part.
...to all the coins I've dropped here

JonTown,
That's an interesting twist (pun very intended) to the routine. I'll give it go! Regards, Leo Martin

Can you explain how you went about getting the twist? I know it probably is fairly simple, but my mind is wrapping around the idea.
Thanks, John |

Hi John,
I will PM you with the information. However, do remember that my method isn't as precise as Michael Sibbernsen's. So if it doesn't work well for you, I would suggest you PM Michael for his twist method. Leo Martin

Cygnus,
Reading the part in your presentation where you say the man became horribly disfigured reminded me about something. In a book I read, (Timeline by Michael Crichton) a new technology is developed for sending people into different time periods. This is discovered when a man is found on the side of the road with massive internal bleeding in all parts of his body. A catscan taken after he has died reveals that the bleeding is occuring because his viens and arteries are not matching up correctly in numerous places in his body! You later find out this is because he has taken too many trips through time, and his molecules get slightly shifted during each trip. This isn't very different from that part of your presentation, but it could be an interesting variation for Reality Twister as well. You could say that it is temporarily being shifted into an alternate dimension. Don't do it too often though, because if you do... |

Maestro,
Never heard of Timeline, but it does sound interesting. The main inspiration for the Philadelphia Experiment idea actually came from the movie by that name which was produced around the mid-80's (and also involved time travel). It was definitely a B-movie, but when I saw it again on TV not long ago, it seemed like a good theme to use for Reality Twister. Leo Martin
