The U.S. government may require it's citizens to have passports to enter back into the U.S. from Canada and Mexico. As of now you only need a i.d. (at least to get back from Canada). I live in New York and love going to the Canadian side of Niagra Falls, but it will not be worth it if I have to get a passport. For those of you that visit either country, or visit the U.S., will you bother getting one?

Yup to quote Martha Stewart.."It's a good thing". A passport is good to have especially if you suddenly have to travel overseas and have it handy. The only bad thing is make sure you take a good pic (just like your drivers license) as you will be doomed to have your mug shot on the passport for five years. On the other hand, unlike a drivers license photo you can go back time and time again until you get a nice one! I'd suggest going to one that takes digital photos that way you know right away if the customs guys are gonna chuckle and can have them take another!

Blue,
I suggest that the key word here is "may". In "governmentese", that translates as "won't". |

That is true, Peter. The chances of this happening, I think, are very good, though. About a month ago, suspected terrorists came into the U.S. from the Niagra Falls border. If people will need passports, hopefully this will not happen again.

Some Americans see this as an intrusion on their privacy, or means of diminishing their freedoms. As an American living overseas, I have a slightly different view. I personally think it's a good idea. If you travel anywhere in the world, you need a passport. Without a valid passport, you can't travel. Our European friends can confirm this. So having a passport in reality opens more doors to you, allows you more opportunities and freedoms.
If you are entering the US, the US government has a valid case for wanting to know who you are and what your business in our country is. I'm of the opinion that living in the US and being an American citizen is a privilege, and it should be treated that way. Ok, I'm done. |
