I’m trying to get the most bang for the buck during my reading and study time.
The treads here on beginning books, dvds/videos and such have save me countless hours of wrong paths, false starts and so on. I thank those that have offered their advice. (Yes I am reading the recommend books and watching DVDs when taking a break from practicing magic.) Hey I’m a workaholic at anything that I love doing! There is much to learn and never enough time. Question is: Are there any CDs, DVDs, or computer programs that will allow me to quickly reference and find information about equipment, and terms in magic. Maybe with a “classic” trick or in someway shows how these devices/techniques are used in magic. Terms like: Topit, Trabuco holdout, switch it, pocket ditch , Okito box . . (Yes I can probably guess what a pocket ditch is, but I want an index that references various ways of doing it.) Or do I just read the “standards” long enough to run across these terms and how these things are done, and used in magic. Thanks in advance. , ,

Get hold of The Amateur Magician's Handbook by Henry Hay (out of print, but lots of used copies available on Amazon among other places). Besides being an EXCELLENT book for the beginner AND the experienced magician, the book has a glossary defining many of the "standard" terms of its time (the book is several decades old), most of which are still valid today.

Take a look at the Tarbell Course. It may be what you are looking for.

Hay's book = single volume, very inexpensive, and covers the important stuff. Also has good tips on presentation. A great little book.
Tarbell = now in seven volumes, sells for about $170 as a set. Highly regarded, though it's too expensive for me to have MY copy yet.

There is a Chris Kenner book on ebay that I'm thinking about buying. A friend of mine highly recommended it. Does anyone have anything positive or negative to say about Totally out of control?

Thanks all:
Rgranville Thanks for the heads up on Amateur Magician's Handbook being out of print. Now I know why I couldn’t find this highly recommend book. I’ll start looking for used copies. JamesTong Airship Just got a set of the Tarbell books. Hey I saved some money before starting this “hobby” again. They are very impressive. But part of what I’ve been trying to find and have failed so far is an “electronic” encyclopedia or program where I can find references, indexes, terms and techniques really quick. For now I am using the search engine here at magic café as well as searching the internet. Then looking up any references, buying books and reading. It just takes a lot of time this way. . . But it’s still great fun . . , I still haven't had time to find "Trabuco holdout". regards,
