Some very pretty moments in that routine.
Folks who don't know the history of the trick would benefit from seeing a few more names on the credits list at the end.

Nope, from what I can gather, Wu said it was from his mentor and teacher, which would be mano. I liked it, I'm just more a fan of patter than music with pantomime... call me crazy, but I like personlized tricks, good handling though.

Haha, thanks Rannie. I don't want to take anything away from the handling, it was pretty to watch and there were some very nice things.

Don't worry Jonathan, in the future this info. will be readily available.
I personally love Mano's patter and delivery. Like Pete, I would have liked it on this as well. As everyone else has said, this was a very beautiful routine. Pete, What's Up!? from a fellow NCer! |

Very nice Mano. Really like the idea of squeezing the coins into silver balls. Visually stunning when the coins were being shook out of the bottle one by one.

That was fantastic! Fooled me badly. I loved the song in the background. Where can I find it? My wife walked by as I was watching it and now she's humming it. You have to tell me what song that is.
Thanks, Callon |

The execution was good, although it took quite a long time for the performer (Mano, I guess) to simply take one coin off a fan. The reproductions/penetrations looked very good.
However, I think some liberties were taken with the original effect. If so, I can't say I agree with the changes. Specifically, in the write up of the original routine (which appeared in "The Looking Glass") the audience never sees the balls. The bottle is opaque, and what the coins look like when they're dropped into the bottle is left to the audience's imaginations. All they know is that they hear the coins fall into the bottle, and they see that they're not in your hands. It was this aspect of the routine that made it interesting, and gave it its charm. In fact, in writing up the routine, Jon Racherbaumer said, "It's vital that you understand that the audience never actually sees any of the ball bearings." I think Jon was right about this, for a couple of reasons: First, there are any number of coin routines that emphasize the visual. Why make this just another one of those when you could instead appeal to a different sensation? Second, the ambigious nature of the effect motivates doing it again. They want to see it again, just to understand what you're showing them. This directs the audience's attention to the cleanliness that you've so carefully created by mastering the techniques. Third, the original routine forces the audience to use logic to understand the effect--they convince themselves that the coins must be getting smaller, since they hear them in the bottle, and they don't see them anywhere else. If you don't direct their logic along the path you desire, they'll use it for something else, like figuring out the trick. But the main reason is really the one I mentioned at the outset--leaving something to the imagination. For more on this, read Jim Steinmeyer's essay on what makes the Wakeling Sawing in Half so much better than ones that show you more. Sometimes less is more, you know?

Thanks everybody for your comments, I really apreciate it.
for the record, I am not Wu, he is my student and friend. Curtis, Thanks soo much for your comment they mean a lot to me. As you mentioned above,in the original routine, Toyohisa Sanada never shows the ballbearings, the audience just hear the sound of them falling in the bottle but never see them, the reason I recorded it this way was because, Charles H is making a compilation of japanese video and asked The Godfather Vinni marini if he knew anybody who could help him with this routine,Vinni asked me and I told him to send me the file to check it out, Vinni forwarded the PDF to me From Charles Hsu, the pdf was from from page 139-144 I read it and work my own handling because I did not like the original one, I made a test performance with patter and sent it to him, he gave me some feed back and told me he wanted the routine without sound and from my torso down, that of course made me change the handling of it, in the first video I sent him ,the ballbearings were smaller and easy to hide just using the index and thumb, but it was still possible to hear them falling, so in order to really get some kind of effect without sound,i got ballbearing almost 3 times bigger then the first one,to be able to show them throughout the effect, that is why the change in the routine. Curtis, I agree about the time it took me to peel off the first coin,Charles H gave me a date to send him the routine, but I work two job and did not had a chance to really work on it till the last weekend, so that is why I decided to send him this one. th He liked it but told me that the background was too busy and he did not like the mouse on the right and he wants me to record the routine from my belly down, which I found very much impossible with the handling I use for it. Jonathan, there is not really that much info in (the looking glass about this routine),it says that it is a combination of Dave Roth hanging coin and Coin in the bottle. and it can be done pantomimic or patter presentation which of course I prefer better,i like to talk a lot,LOL. Hey Rannie, I'm sorry I have not been in touch with you recently, but I will catch up with you mi hermano. Pete, You are not crazy man, I love to patter as well. Sangita, I'm glad you like the routine and production. I personally was not that happy with this performance because the short time I have been practicing this routine, butmy friend Wu asked to uploade just to get a few feed back, anyway I'm removing it after I finished writing this post and maybe in the future I'll shoot another one with patter. be well eveyone. all the best. Mano. P.S. Wow, my first post over a month, I like that, that means more time for me to practice and get my act toguether litterally. |
