Well, I have been on here for about two years and for the last year I have been talking about working internationally and I believe I have finally booked one.
The agency I am working with asked me to obtain Cargo Costs of my equipment - mostly stage material - a few illusions....I estimate about 200 pounds would be a safe number. The venue is a resort in the Middle East, does any have any good experiences with specific airlines when it comes to Cargo Shipping their equipment. I am leaving from Montreal, Canada. Any input would be great. Thanks. |

I would check the local phone book for air cargo shippers. I know in the past Flying Tiger cargo was pretty good, but I do not know if they are still around. Do be sure your items are insured. many things can happen.
Good luck k

Do you mean insured when I ship them or insured in general....

In general, and get shipping insurance. I'm not sure if regular insurance would cover lost props.

Steven Kline is going to Hong Kong with several illusions soon. I'd PM or email him for the straight scoop!

MB get a shipping agent.... They will range and buy empty space on airlines for you for a fraction of the cost....
Also,,, keep in mind shipping internationally they go by the sizes and not the weight (for the most part). Plus usually shipping the equipment out of the US is much cheaper then having it shipped back into the USA... Keep that in mind if you are collecting the fee for shipping....

I know that most entertainer concentrate on doing their best show and that is a good thing. But, many never think of other things that could affect them! I have been in the Middle East and a few other places and like to recommend that you check up on the customs of the area that you are going to. Offending someone can be as simple as crossing your legs while sitting and showing the bottom of your shoe to someone. Don’t do that by the way! Trust me on this you do not want to offend anyone. You hit the hammer on the nail....... But some things can be over looked in a boyish fun manner...... When I was touring in Thailand.... I was doing the tore and restore bill..... OHHHH two things about money in Thailand A. You do not destory, fold, or crankle the money B. It had a photo of the KING (or princes) and you do not destory the anything with the kings photo on it... When I did this everyone was gasping just becuase I broke so many LAWS and/or ethics ... But I acted like OOHHH oopss they laughed and were amazed when I restored it.... It was the best ever torn and restore bill....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I did it over 50 times!!!!!! :)

Something else to consider, and I bet Curtis can chime in here as well.
I know that some countries are flat out RUN by graft and corruption. Kind of like being in Chicago. What this means is that you may very well end up with some unforseen "taxes" when you try to bring things in. I know that in Mexico you are not allowed to import things from China. IF something says "Made in China" it is confiscated by customs never to be seen again. You can end up with lots of trouble not knowing things like this. You never know who the country you happen to be entering is angry with! It is best to really check this stuff out pretty seriously. And to have some cash on hand, just to cover the extra "taxes" that may very well show up in smaller less regulated countries. (Was that politically corect enough?)

YES,,, this is so true!!! This is how I get around that particular problem so far..... A. In your contract you make the client pay for shipping and or prepay it to you.. If they prepay it charge an over amount fee (If not used refund it to the client)... Most of the time the client handles the shipping it is very common.... B. Most countries have a waiver stating that the goods will be returned back to the USA and you have to pay an insurance fee and a refundable duty (tax). C.If you are performing large illusions shows ,you should really have your management (agent) retain a production company in that country. They will handle all your staging, picking up your props, even help set them up, lights, sound, ushers, etc ,etc,,,,, Also, they will even pick you up from the airport, and set up transportation daily for you to get around town.... The best way to to go!!!! D.DHL, they have a department that handles entertainment prop shipping... I was speaking to this guy at an event who works for DHL, and he stated that there is a special department that handles the tours, costumes, show props, art work, etc..... They clear their shipments through customens in the air...... They said their prices are about 50% to 80% less then regular DHL....
