I think we may be arguing about the wrong thing. The British certainly can't claim all the great ones – Anneman, Dunniger, Geller and Kreskin would be on most anyone's Top Ten Greatest list.
I think the British CAN claim to produce a disproportionate share of the world's great actors. And that's what great mentalists are, aren't they? To me, Derren Brown is one of the finest showmen around. It would be cool to know how he achieves some of his effects – but I ultimately don't care how he does what he does. I admire the WAY he does it. It's acting. Yes, the accent helps, so does the regal attitude. That, I know, is why British actors are invariably cast as villians. One, the accent sounds "posh" and/or haughty to Americans, so not "like us." But we also think it sounds smarter than we do – and you know the greatest villians are always smarter than the hero, that's what makes them scary. Plus, no one can sneer better. Could anyone act more superior than, say, Alan Rickman? It's the Shakespeare training. Must be. |

I was waiting for somebody from America to make the "British are better actors" argument. I'll quote a recent quote from Stephen Fry:
"British actors are overrated in Hollywood because Americans may be dazzled by their accents, according to Stephen Fry. The comedian, actor, novelist, critic, quiz show host and polymath made the suggestion after seeing a "blitz of Brits" making their presence felt at this year's Golden Globes and Oscars." Having said that, I am laughing at (not with) 75% of the posts here. In mentalism, we use unjustified preconceptions and stereotypes within our routines (as well as in cold reading, etc.). I would think that the fact that we USE these things all the time would kind of give us all a clue that we do the same things ourselves. Guess not. We have people who are english but aren't british, people who are british but are rubbish, people who were thought to be english but weren't, and so on and so forth. We even get to the point about where people were BORN, even if they were raised and educated somewhere else. I think that pretty much everybody can agree this is a really stupid thing to say when spelled out that way, but here we are having this conversation. I mean, at the very least, what if we all find out Brown was adopted and was really born in Italy? What does that do to your arguments? If it affects it in any way then your arguments are completely and utterly worthless. But don't mind me and my pesky logic, lol. But, in conclusion to my post and my involvement with this worthless thread, I can't believe this thread actually has people making what they think to be arguments basing performance ability on a condition of birth. It's pretty offensive but, and I must be a minority here, I think that broad applications of stereotypes, especially those with no actual "evidence" is indicative of a lack of critical thought. Of course, we all know how those French are all nationalistic and all. Carlos PS- see, isn't that offensive? Good thing I don't mean it, something I wish many of you could say, lol.

Yes, I agree, the English are the best at being English. And I agree, cats and turtles, and Dolphins, very smart, very smart indeed. (said with English accent)
Only they have the worst stage fright. Didn't Crowley say that the new language to speak with the gods or aliens or something was English? So in conclusion, if we want to be better mentalists, we should eat more pudding!

Oh, I hate to do this...
Can someone define"better" and "best"? Let's stop prancing (an English word) for a moment, and suggest that lay audiences (not magicians) should decide. Well, who have they been exposed to? Safe to say that Dunninger started the mass-media representation of mentalism. Uri Geller was "the" television groundbreaker. Kreskin had arguably the most exposure for mentalism in the entire 20th century. Now it might be Derren Brown. Sure, everyone else is a "worker", but are they known to the "average guy"? Go on, ask your neighbor who the most popular (or best-est) mindreader/mentalist is/was, and THEN we'll have our p*ssing contest. Drinking lots of water, Lee |

Seems everyone is overlooking the obvious. A disproportionately large percentage of top mentalists (past and present) are Jewish.

I have considered this question as to whom the best mentalists are and I have not been able to find one yet that qualifies as a mentalist. Every name listed here is of a magician who gravitated toward mentalism, or is someone who purports themselves to have actual supernatural powers and is therefore not a mentalist, but a paranormal super-human. Not a single name here is of a palm reader, tarot reader, or medium. Therefore no mentalists have yet been named. Having said all of that, I have come to the unerring conclusion that of all those that will be named here as the best mentalist will be a human being. (With a .07% +/- ratio in order to offset the one jackass who may enter this listing.)
