I am considering building my first illusion, a simple tip-over trunk, for use in June 2008. (Well, after that too, but that's the target debut, so I have time.)
The venue in question is going to be setup in such a way that the angles are going to be a problem. I have only seen basic plans for TOT's, but from what little I can surmise, angles are a serious issue. Is there some amazing design for a TOT that somehow deals with this problem? |

The box in a box has this covered. As an example there is an Owen's on Magic Auction.

Thanks for the reference. That looks sharp. Is this design available in published materials anywhere? Or is it proprietary to owens?

I built one that just had permanent, non-tipping sides. In other words, there were two panels on either side of the tipping box; I think I got the idea from something of Wakeling's. It turned out really nice-looking. You can see pictures here:

I love the idea with the sides becoming opaque from certain angles.

I had a tip-over/sub-trunk built about a year ago an I love it! It also incorporates the shell panels of an outer box that can be used to cover the angles of the tip-over illusion. If I'm simply performing the sub-trunk, the outer shell comes off completely. Everything is on castors for ease of transport.
I started with the Osborne plans for the sub-trunk and then combined it with the basic design plans for a tip-over trunk. We then continued to tweak the design until it was perfect. Total cost from start to finish was only $700.00 Canadian. Kent

Ok well I am starting to build my tip over sub trunk today.... Any advice on how to actually make it tip to the front? Hinges?? I was thinking a dowel running through the box with holes at the bottom.. Would that work?

Not bad thanks for asking.....
I decided to use 2 huge fence hinges to make it tip. I got my 4 sides built, they are ready for assembly tomorrow. I think it will look and work really great! I love the idea of a 2 in 1 box.... |
