All,
Just got back from Oahu and I saw two great magic shows. My favorite was the Magic of Polynesia with John Hirokawa. This was filled with illusions and funny as heck. I was entertained right from the start and wanted to see more when it was all over. Even better I got to talk with John Hirokawa for at least 15 minutes after the show. He is really humble and you can tell he is thankful for his fans. He was very genuine. For anyone heading to Oahu, Hawaii, I would recommend going to his show. You will not be disappointed. Of all the shows that I have seen in my life his was by far the most entertaining. Even over the DC ones. The other magic show was Mark Allen Mauricio. He, I believe, is an up and coming star in magic. He was able to pull the audience into his show and kept us on the edge of our seats. I met him afterwards and he too was very pleasant and humble. I am a huge fan and will recommend these magicians to everyone going to paradise. You can see their websites below. http://www.halekoa.com/magic.htm http://www.magicofpolynesia.com/ Patrick |

Thanks for the reviews Patrick. My wife and I are scheduled to go in September, and so we will be looking forward to seeing both of these shows.

I came back from Maui, last month. I visited the show Jodi Baran is putting on and it was really good. I wanted to see Warren and Annabell's but it was booked.
If you are on Maui go see both.

While I've never seen his show, Jodi is a wonderful person to hang around. He has a passion for magic and entertaining I've seen in few performers.

JC - many thanks for the Maui links. I am certain that we will catch at least one of those - both if I can trick the wife into it!

Update:
Had the please a couple of weeks ago of seeing the Jody Baran show. What a whirlwind. Even my jaded wife had a great time. Jody presents so many illusions in a 1½ hour show, and does an amazing job of tying in historical magical themes to the illusion segments. We had a great time meeting with Jody after the show, and he was a complete delight to visit with. Highly recommended. The next night we visited Warren Gibson's Warren & Annabelle's. Warren is a very good, experienced magician, presenting mostly close-up & parlor style magic. Very reminiscent of a Castle style performance. He was able to hold his audience for a solid 2 hours. Unbelievable! And he does 2 show a night. I did not have an opportunity to visit with Warren. If you are planning a trip to Maui, I urge you to include both of these shows into your itinerary, and make your reservations before arriving at the island. During peak season these shows can sell out a week or two in advance! Aloha! Chris |

Chris, glad you were able to attend both shows. Your are right on the Baran show, so much magic packed into an hour and a half. One of the shows I've enjoyed the most.

I will also say that John Hirokawa is one of the nicest and kost humble magicians I have ever met. I had the pleasure of meeting and talking with him for hours at the past combined convention this past summer. He was such a generous man and talked with a lot of my SYM club members who were also attending.

Sorry to bring an old post back. I just came back from Honolulu yesterday, and I watched John's magic show. It was really really good!!
John: Not sure if you are a member of this forum. If you are, I just wanted to let you know that I had a lot of fun on Friday night (June 14). Everything was perfect. I also love the idea of combining magic and dance. Since I was only in Honolulu for a few days, I had to choose between a Luau (for a second time) or your magic show. Man, I am glad that I made the right decision!! Other MC members: if you haven't seen John's show before, you are missing a lot! A must-go in Honolulu!! |

Are these shows still running in Hawaii? I've seen John's and Warren & Annabelle's.

John Hirokawa is a great show with superior production values and more than magic. Jody Baran on Maui also very good - slightly smaller scale than John. Warren & Anabelle's Warren Gibson is an accomplished close-upper. Worth it to see all three if you get the chance.

I saw John's show the last time I was in Hawaii and it was wonderful. On a related note, I understand that Paul Kozak is currently performing in Hawaii as well, but I'm not sure which Island he is on.

I concur about the magic of polynesia show..
EXTREMELY funny.. The way that he handles the elder Japanese volunteers has to be seen! Brilliant stuff! I too, like someone else mentioned earlier, prefer this show to DC.. The only thing is that there are some similarities.. John is so much better of an entertainer than DC that he really doesn't need to copy anything from coppefields show. I am speaking of mainly the snow storm in the audience. Although I really do prefer Johns show to Davids, I think that people do make the comparison and if he dropped the Copperfield tricks, he could certainly stand on his own laurels.. Definitely catch the show if you are in Honolulu! Even my fiancé enjoyed it and she normally hates magic! Damien |
