I've been hired to perform at a "Get Acquainted" dinner this Saturday, doing two hours of strolling magic. I plan on essentially using the same material that I have in my restaurant act, with the addition of a few things that aren't really prudent for that type of environment. One thing I do use regularly in my work is the Anniversary Waltz. My question is, would using it on other couples at the reception diminish its impact any before performing it on the newlyweds to be, or, given the occasion, is it something best suited for the special couple?
I'm inclined to think that one performance is the way to go. Any thoughts? Josh |

I'd do that as a "special" routine for the happy couple to be. The one effect that is considered theirs.
You've got plenty of other stuff for everyone else. Just my 2 cents. Good luck. Mark. |

Mark,
That's what I was thinking, just have adjust my patter accordingly now (usually the couples I perform for are long married and very cynical about it, great joke opportunities) Well, off to the dry cleaners. |

What is a 'get aquanted' dinner?

A dinner where the families of the soon to be bride and groom get together, most for the first time, and get to know (meet) each other. Having the dinner makes it more relaxed and extends the time the families are together.
Josh, have a great time with it...and make sure they feed you! Mark. |

I've done plenty of wedding parties. Only perform Anniversary Waltz for the wedding couple and give everyone a chance to gather around for the special moment. You are guaranteed oohs and ahhhhs.

Having drove by the venue today, that seems to be the case. If only I asked for more money...

I think Danny's answer is the one I can accept.
I remember my parents after my new inlaws left town after I got married. My mother, who was a wonderful woman, turned to me and said "they don't know our address do they?". Thank goodness they didn't! |

Just got back, it wasn't in the building I had thought, rather what had appeared to be a converted barn, which had minimal air conditioning. Once the band started playing, a lot of people moved outside. 90 degree heat, high humidity and a wool suit to not make for a good time, but things went off without a hitch, even though my decks were bricks by the end of the evening. It was definitely a different performance environment, but an enjoyable one overall.

Haha...nice Josh!
It's gigs like that when you appreciate the indoor events with air conditioning, water, etc. Glad to hear it went good man! Best. Steve |

It's just a shame I didn't get there sooner. It was a barbecue buffet. Oh well, maybe next time.
