Hi all,
I'm in GA and am toying with the idea of a confederate soldier persona for an act. I have a nice military style sword that could pass as Civil War era, and I think that using E's 1800 Bikes would be a nice touch. I have not purchased a stabbed card trick and need advice on which version would suit my needs: no gaffed sword, gaffed cards. Also, I'm assuming that it won't be difficult to gaff E's 1800 cards for the effect. I also have a question regarding another trick that I'll put in another post. Thanks, David |

John Bannon has a ungimmicked card stab in his book Smoke and Mirrors. I think you have to use a knife for his version, though. I'm not really sure. Hope this might have helped out.

Tarbell, Volume 3, "The Flash Card Stab", page 282, is an ungimmicked card stab that uses a knife but could easily use a sword. You give the knife or sword to a spectator and have him locate the card.

Chuck-
Does Tarbell's technique require a table, or can I do it standing/walk-around? Thanks, David |

After reading the replies, perhaps I should clarify. The sword needs to be ungaffed, but the cards can be gaffed if I can manually gaff E's 1800 cards. I already have a military sword that I could use as part of my uniform.
Also, I might not mind purchasing a gaffed sword for this effect as long as it could reasonably pass as Civil War era. No martial arts or middle-eastern style swords. Thanks again, David |

Tarbell's method does not require a table, you can do it standing or walk-around. Actually, the card is selected and returned to the deck. The deck is shuffled and is then wrapped in flash paper and handed to the spectator to stab or push the knife or sword thru the paper into the deck. He cannot make a mistake no matter where the knife/sword is inserted. While he is holding the sword stuck in the deck, you touch the flash paper wrapped around the deck, and the spectator is left holding the sword with the selected card on it. The balance of the deck falling to the floor, etc. If you want more information, please let me know.

I will PM you a method. Effect: Card chosen; can be signed, but why?... Sword, ungimmicked, is shown and you can do a few flourishy moves, etc. Then, cards are thrown into the air and chosen card caught on the tip of the sword.

I should have mentioned that the cards in the Tarbell effect do not need to be gaffed. In fact, you can use a borrowed deck. Also, no sleights are required.
