I do not do a lot of close up programs. Mostly platform/stage, so I was wondering. I was taught not to have the same type of effects put together in the same show. Is it unwise to do an audience participation of sponge balls and later do coins across at the same setting? They seem to be the same type of a transposition effect from hand to hand.

It would be a bit boring yes

The effects are indeed too similar to put together in the same setting. It is not so much being boring for it depends on the performer. It could be quite redundant though. Then again, I really do not know which sponge ball routine you do and which coins across routine you plan to perform. Audience participation always has merits if placed strategically in your program. There are always exceptions to the rule. The advices given to us by our mentors are often based on heir experiences. I think it would be more unwise to NOT explore. To each its own I believe. Good luck REV BILL!

Depends on your presentations for the effects in question. Doing a transit of one ball vanishing from your hand to join another in a spectators does feel the same as doing it with coins in a spectators hand. My suggestion would be to either vary the presentation for the two effects or the method. If you're going to do the sponges in the spectators hand (which is always a killer), I'd suggest doing a VCA or Three Fly effect as a coins across instead.
As Rannie has already pointed out, there are exceptions to the rule. Such as if you do do a coins across in the spectators hand,(or completely in the spectators hand, as in my Impossible Coins Across) and then do an effect such as Presto's version of the sponges combined with the paper balls over the head routine, you'd be safe.

I think it depends on the sponge ball routine and the kind of coins across
If you do a sponge balls across that would not be good. If you do a 2 in the hand 1 in the pocket style effect, especially if its in teh spectators hand, that is different enough I think. Also, how long is this set? if its 5 minutes, you could probably do 5 with sponge balls OR 5 with coins and that would be more compelling than "here is a coins across, now let me put them away and take out these small red balls that I will make travel" But if its in the context of a 15 or 20 minute set, then it could work much better (EDIT: I hadn't seen Eric's post until I had already posted. I agree with what he had to say as well.

I would do that. I can only speak for myself. I have done it before in exactly that order with success. Steve Dacri did it in the performance part of his DVD if I remember it correctly.

When I worked at a local restaurant, there was two effect I did at every table, they were, Carneys' sponge ball routine (combind with one in the hand two in the pocket), and a version of Roger Klouse's (SP) coins across (Triple Threat). What I would do is use one spectator for the sponge ball routine and a second for the coins across.I didn't perform them back to back but both in the same set. Both routines receive great reactions.

Colombina has a sponge ball routine that ends up with a sponge changing to a half dollar...perfect transition into a coin routing as long as it's not similar to the sponge ball routine
