Why do some members on here believe in psychics, telepathy, remote viewing baloney.
**** some even claim they have these abilities (but can't turn them on at will, of course) Some support Uri Geller whilst he cons the general public with his crystals etc. The sycophantic support is bizarre. He's a one trick pony (though he won't admit it's a trick; his website sales may suffer). I thought magicians were beyond gullible woo woo rubbish? You all know the tricks, the ***** lack of any evidence for anything paranormal yet still trot out nonsense. ******** is what it is. |

Some people believe because there is always a possibility that something does it exist as it has not been proven that it doesn't. The question is, why do some magicians and mentalists think that they have to shout louder than the others because they think that they are right in their observations?

Although I don't support the way Mr. Geller does things, how he (in my own opinion) misleads the public, etc. I think the recent thread on here was whether people felt he was good for our art. I do believe that he has given more visibility to mentalism over the past 30 years than anyone else, except perhaps Kreskin.
These are my own views only.

Then again, maybe it isn't applicable. Also - I think the saying 'hate the sin, love the sinner' may apply. I am a fan of Uri because without him I would never had studied psychology. I would have had no interest in 'mind power'. I think basically those who like Uri, despite what we suspect/know that he gets up to, have a forgiving nature ... which isn't such a bad thing ... |

Why do politicians believe that we actually believe the stuff they tell us when they run for office? Why do some men think they are God's gift to women? Why do people live beyond their means and somehow expect magically that they will never end up broke? Why do people believe all kinds of myths and tales? Because they want to believe it. Delusion is one of the strongest psychological defense mechanisms we have, and can be abused in all sorts of fun ways.

Amen to that Photius. Some of us need to believe our own lies. I think the technical term is a confabulation or a rationalization.

That is things we know we shouldn't do but do because some form of pleasure associated with it tempts us.

Really? I got it into my head that is a term used to describe and make sense of certain kinds of sado-masochistic relating - not necessarily of the sexual kind.
Maybe the term has been 'hijacked' by lay people to describe temptation. Or maybe I'm completely wrong and stupid to dispute you on this! Must check my textbooks... Another possible answer: to why Magicians think they have real powers - the boundaries between madness and sanity are not as clear-cut as people tend to think. For example a lot of people in the 'normal' population hear voices, have strange beliefs, claim to have dreams that have predicted the future etc., but aren't necessarily 'crazy', and lead normal and successful lives. With 31,402 registered members, I think it would be more surprising if one or two of us didn't have unusual ideas such as these! |

I have a personnal family experience were a person claiming to be able to heal was involved. I'm not about to go into it publicly here. However, if Geller has moved from entertaining by bending spoons(which I remember him for) to claiming he can heal, then to me he moves to a whole new catagory called "jerks"

Wow Harry. Such animosity toward those who believe in the supernatural. There are instances in this world of things happening that simply cannot be explained using the technology we have today.
I myself have had what can at best be called prophetic dreams and at worst a very weird coincidence. None the less, the very things I dreamed of weeks earlier happened exactly as I dreamed it. How can something like that be explained other than as paranormal by today's standards? Some may have that answer, I don't. To lash out at those who believe in the supernatural as you did shows only your intolerance toward others. While I do not post here as often as I once did, I still do come here from time to time. All I can offer to this discussion is that this kind of intolerance does not need to be exhibited for us. If you want to express your opinion, do so politely. I certainly know you would not be happy if you read a post by someone else stating that you were an idiot because you liked performing card tricks or because you were Republican or any other reason. Food for thought.

Perhaps a forum that is meant to discuss deceptive methodologies and presentations for entertainment purposes as a Mentalist is not the place to debate personal religious beliefs, from either point of view.
