They are both tools that produce similar effects. As tools they have specific and not identical uses. Think of a standard (slot) screwdriver and a Phillips head (cross) screwdriver. Similar, both do similar things but are designed for a specific purpose. That is the Bat and the Raven. Both use the same principle in different ways to achieve similar effects but using the principle in a different method. (I know that I am talking in code and it may not make much sense, but I cannot be clearer without exposing the secrets to both these devices).
To answer the second part of your question, about metallic objects, the answer is NO. Both devices require that the target object be ferrous in nature. In my mind this is the critical limitation to Both the Raven and the Bat. There are simply other devices that can produce the exact (EXACT) same effect without the target object having to be ferrous in nature. This has been discussed in depth and at length elsewhere on this very forum. They are good for their limited use. I suspect that you will be like the majority of the people I know that have purchased one of each. You will look at it, try it out, use it a couple of times in performance, then put it in your magic drawer and forget it.

I prefer the raven, because it is designed to vanish, and it vanishs better than other devices like pulls, because it is smoother and "connects" faster and more unoticably.
The bat is a raven without the vanish component.... it can still vanish things, but its unclean and you can't pull up your sleeves. The bat is for PK work, the raven for coin work I use the raven more than any other coin magic, just because it doesn't need slight of hand and seems impossible. |
