I am new to magic and would like to learn the right way, for cards I got the book and dvd, royal road to card magic (and born to perform dvd for routines). I have been tackling this a chapter at a time, slowly to really learn magic. I also used the born to perform dvd to learn the 2 card monte trick to keep me interested and to start performing for family). I want to do the same for coins (I currently have the bobo book and modern coin magic 4 dvd set). I am looking for a dvd for coins that will give me great routines, so that I will be motivated to learn the sleights and can perform relatively quickly.
For example I have born to perform cards dvd, and it gives great routines, but I use royal road for learning. My long winded question is, for coins how would you start, modern coin magic dvd, bobo book, and coin man walking to get great routines, (and maybe a flipper coin) to start, or is this dvd for more advanced people, are there any routines in that can be done by a beginner willing to learn magic the right way? Or is there another dvd that is recommended that has great routines with a few sleights that I can start with. |

I would definately start with Bobo's Modern Coin Magic book. It covers so much material! You get sleights, tricks, routines, and so much more. It's amazing!
"Mommy, what's that man doing up there?"
"He's putting on a Blindfold, my dear." "What's a Blindfold, Mommy?" "Something you wear so that you cannot see." "Why's he wearing one, Mommy?" "So that he can tell us what he's looking at." - |

Welcome to the wonderful world of magic! I'm new as well and started with cards and a flipper but after seeing some Dean Dill stuff I knew I had to find out more about coins. The Café is a HUGE source of info and these folks will guide you in whatever direction you want to go. As a fellow new guy I will tell you what I have done so far...... I have JB Bobo's Modern Coin Magic both in book and DVD which are my staples. I personally like Michael Ammar's teaching style and his vid series starts with The Complete Intro to Coin Magic and then he has his Miracles series with different volumes. This is what I'm using at present along with some awesome assistance from some of the great coin men here at the Café. Practice, Practice and more Practice, heed the advise of the elders and practice some more! You will get tons of recommendations and it sure doesn't seem as though anyone has tried to steer me wrong so far. Jump in, study well, practice hard, try to keep frustration to a minimum and above all HAVE FUN! Good luck,

Start with Bobo. Ammar has already been suggested. Another great source is David Roth. He has a good teaching style and easy to follow.

I would recommend that you read and follow the study guides that are available here: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......41&6
They will guide you to know what you should be working on. This way you wont be jumping around mindlessly and missing the important stuff. Also with the study guide for bobo, once you get past the first few weeks you start learning quick tricks that you can perform (and of course the vanishes that you learn the second week). Also he suggests that once you work through the first few chapters you make your own one coin routine. This will keep you interested in that you are making your own routine so you have to be creative, and you need to keep practicing it and making it better because you really don't have a guideline to go off of like you do when you learn a specific routine from somewhere else. Yes you can follow he suggestion and use the three routines given in the back, but I suggest that not only do you do that, but you make your own. Sorry I rambled a bit, but I'm just trying to convince you to be patient and follow these study guides. They will help you tremendously. And in a few weeks if you need some ideas for one coin routines you can PM me and I will share with you mine. Good luck. Matty

Anybody have any thoughts on getting a flipper coin or an expanded shell?

The expanded shell is a good choice, I would also suggest a copper/silver coin. There are plenty of ideas and routines in Bobo for both of these gaffs, which are extremely versatile. And I'd get both of those coins before I would get a flipper coin, but that's just my personal opinion. SETH

If you are looking at an expanded shell, look at a hopping half set. That way you get both the expanded shell and a sun/moon coin. I do not like the Sasco coins because the expanded shell does not completely cover the coin. Johnson's makes a decent product at a decent price. Other great choices, although expensive, are Todd Lassen's coins and Schoolcraft. I tend to like the older, silver coins better than todays coins. I also have been questioned about the legitimacy of the older coins less than the newer coins.

It seems that a flipper is not popular for a beginner?

There are so many great routines that can be done with gaffed coins and there are many different types of gaffs as well as who makes the best etc. I now have several gaffs but without knowing the basics and fundamentals of coin handling you can end up as just another guy with some trick coins! Although I have a small fortune tied up in my coins (and I haven't even started buying customs yet) I have gone back to the basic handling of regular coins so as to hone my craft so that it won't be as likely to hear "Lemme see that coin" or if they do, I already have it safely tucked away somewhere! Just one mans thoughts!

That's kind of the same approach I have with cards, I am learning all my tricks with a normal deck. I perform for friends and relatives so they are not shy at looking at props, so the second you say no you can't see this deck, the magic is kinda spoiled.

Also my goal is to get good enough with coins so I can buy a nice set of gaffs, I love the look of the ben franklin half dollar from schoolcraft. When I get good enough to deserve it I want to get a great set, maybe for christmas.

It's fun to look forward to new resources and gaffs but please don't rush it. The Bobo resources you already have should keep you busy for a long while. For now, forget the hype and gaffs. Don't go out and spend any more money until you learn and understand the tricks in Bobo's. There's some great tricks there that use no gaffs, perhaps an extra coin, are fairly easy and will get you performing in due time. Best to ya, |

Jaz is absolutely right - do not make the mistake and run after hypes, the must haves. Build your skills, then the magical world is wide open for you . .
