If you perform, you will have those instances where everything doesn't go as planned. It happens to all of us.
What are some lines you use when things go south? Let's say you drop a card, coin or sponge-ball on the floor during a trick. What do you say while collecting your wayward props (and thoughts) to smooth things over? Here's a line I've been using for a while that turns any awkward moment into a funny one. It always gets laughs! It's an adaptation of an old Stephen Wright (stand-up comic) line [I say it almost as if I'm talking to myself as I'm picking up the dropped card or whatever]: "When I was a young magician I used to practice all the time because I was told 'practice makes perfect'...then I heard 'nobody's perfect', so I stopped practicing."
We magicians are of a unique lot. We aspire to deceive. We are liars. We are cheats. We are con artists. We can not be trusted. But we mean well.

I have a Carl Cloutier DVD, on it he fumbles the cards during a shuffle and drops one. He looks at the card, looks at the audience shrugs and says 'misdirection' then carries on. Because of the way he is and the rapport he's built with the audience it's a great moment.
