I guess it's just me, but I always liked the brainwave deck better. I feel that you can squeeze out TWO magical moments here, and someone said earlier the suspense when with the I.D, going through the face up cards waiting to see their card and it's not there, I feel the same with the B.W, going through the cards face down and them thinking, "is my card going to be the only one face up?" is suspenseful too. And it IS face up, plus you still have the back reveal still to come. I guess I'm the only one who votes the Brainvave deck. Easier to count to the card too, but as long as you can add/subtract, the I.D. is easy also. One vote for the Brainwave!

I think I put this little subtlety I used to use years ago when I worked at Hollywood Magic. Many times the group you were doing it to wanted it repeated. I saw some of the guys put the deck back in the case then had them call out a card and pull the case out to reveal it. I thought that really made it look like what it was: a trick deck that does all the work for you.
So the first thing I said is take the deck below the counter and pretend you are trying to figure out what card they will call out as you supposedly turn it around in the pack. The second thing was a subtlety I would say. I still went through the regular ID patter the second time, but I said, "Let's do this a bit faster. Here I'll fan out the invisible cards. Name one and take it out." So they would pretend to pick a card from an invisible pack I held in the air. I then would say, "Okay, what did you get?' Let's say they said 10 of Spades, I would say, "So we find it easier this time, put it face down.... hmmm? Yeah, put it face down next to the 3 of Hearts." So they would pretend to do that. Now I would pull out the real deck and spread it. There was the face down 10... but I wouldn't say a thing yet some would notice that it was also next to the 3 of Hearts. Just a little touch. Greg

In this kind of effect, my favorite now is All alone by David Regal.

I find it quite funny that the big argument against Brainwave is that it's overkill... DC made the statue of liberty disapear... some might call that overkill...
So the effect is 2 effects in one... treat it as such and get 2 reactions instead of just one? Imo brainwave wins cause it's that much stronger of an effect... you just need to make each reveal count with some patter... I think the problem is lazy magicians who don't know how to patter... |
