Is anyone aware of any stage routines involving totem poles?
I am ruminating on a metamorphosis routine involving legends from the Tlingit native Americans of the Northwest, where I live. The Raven, the bear, the salmon, the racoon, the whale are commonly seen on totem / spirit carvings throughout Washington. It would be overwhelming to involve all the actual animals, thought the raven and racoon *might* be doable... Reverse metamorphosis might be the more interesting plot...

If you can afford the costume, you can add a bear to the list. A salmon might be tricky, but I'm sure the bear could catch one for you.

Clever thought... but in the end I will use animals that are realistic, both in cost and in licensure. A wolfish looking dog, can call it a wolf (canis lupus, Canis lupus familiaris, feh), raven and maybe a snake... all of which are totems on Tlingit poles, all of which could make for a powerful effect.
Just wondering if anyone's done this before.

My friend and I working on a Totem Pole illusion for a while. As soon as we find a builder who has really good experience with woodwork we try to release it. You can see the picture here:

In The Wizards' Journal #5 (on my site), I wrote an article about talking Tiki Masks and an animated talking Totem Pole, used as decorations for The Wizard's Den. It probably isn't relevant to what you are seeking, but the concept of the heads on a totem pole talking to one another, perhaps commenting on members of the audience and how they might be fun to hunt and eat, could add some levity to your illusion. Then when the totem pole transforms into the live animals who begin to crawl and slither towards the audience, some real excitement might ensue.
It's a good idea and I wish you luck with it. You might contact Autumn Morningstar (an illusionist and a member of this Forum) who might have additional thoughts for you.

What about doing a totem pole/mismade version?

Be careful when using native wildlife. There are regulations that you must meet or the various federal agencies will come down on you like a ton of bricks.

Absolutely. I've seen trained ravens, there's a man not far way who has a reptile house who could provide the snake, and the wolfy dog shouldn't be hard to find in the land of huskies.
Getting the Orca will be rough though, might have to settle for a salmon flung by the Pike Place fish market guys.
