So I just watched the trailer for the remake of the horror film "Willard," which comes out in March. It looks promising and vry bizzare.
So I haven't seen the original yet. Can anybody tell me if it was any good? The idea of man having a connection with beast is kind of interesting and thought provoking. Any other films that spring to mind with this theme? Jonathan

I'm very excited about the film. I just keep shaking my head though over which boneheaded marketing executive thought it was such a brilliant idea to use the "Rat in a Cage" song for the trailer. Doesn't fit at all. But the rat tidal wave in the elevator sold me on the whole movie =)
I'm going to try to rent the video soon. If I can find it I'll write a review... or something. IMDB seems has some good information on it. And some reviews of it too. -Sean Covernton |

Willard was a better book than a movie by far! However I remember at least 10 of us cramming into a car to go see it. It was a fun movie, Not a gross out film. It did so well at the theaters that "Ben" was released a year later. Both are well worth watching but the books just seemed to be better. And why is that you ask? Imagination!

Cool. I'm going to try and check it out.
As for the Smashing Pumpkins song, I haven't seen a recent horror film that hasnt been the victim of directer/studio conflict. I mean the directer wants a classy horror film and the studio is like "we want something 14 year olds will find amusing." It is because of this that control freaks have a difficult time releasing films. Rob Zombie, for example, directed "House of 1000 Corpses" which is going to be released next month. It's taken him almost 8 years to get it released (dont quote me on that --I'm not sure of the details) because it was his vision and not the studio's. It's a real shame. It is possible that the directer of "Willard" wanted something like the original "Psycho" and the studio told him that was ok but he would need to include a Smashing Pumkins song to attract a bigger younger audience. I'm realy excited though. An another note I saw the coming attraction for "Willard" before "Final Destination 2" That movie was incredible. Yes, the characters were paper thin and yes, there was much less quality in the script than the first one, but it made up for it with the insane gross out violence. I swear I haven't seen a movie like that in theatres since errrrr... ever. And as for the Grandiose Car accident scene in the beginning, that scene was off the hook. I would quote the arrow on that one but this post would be deleeted. What a refreshing trip to the movies after crud like "Valentine," etc. It was refreshing to see such a ruthless, bold, entertaining, horror aficionado pleasing, film. :bat: Jonathan

Are you suggesting that Willard trained the rat, and then Ben trained the other kid?
That holds promise of a very scary plot for an effect with a live mouse or rat. Imagine something like "splinter" from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles telling the magician what to do at times in routine. Perhaps leaving small notes for the magi with names of selected cards etc.

Having raised several pet rats in my lifetime, I can tell you that if you're willing to work with them, you can train rats to do many things. You'll have to be very patient, though, and take things one step at a time.
Rats live an average of three years, which is their only drawback. You can get really attached to the little buggers...

Unfortunately, I am not familiar with dove magic. But it is something that has always fascinated me. I'm going to probably pick up a good book on dove magic and see what effects could be performed with rats. I actualy saw some rats in a family-owned pet shop and they looked quite cute. It's good for us that just the word "rat" conjures up some not-so-cute images.

I saw Willard last Sunday. Always a fan of Crispen Glover, I found him to carry the movie through. I saw both the original Ben and Willard so long ago that I couldn't really remember them.
In short the film was simple, mindless fun. It was dark, beautifully shot, and had an impressive score. It was mercifully free of a lot of CGI except for one killer money shot. Most of it all, it was surreal and satirical, just as Glover is himself. While not great, I thought it was the worth six bucks for the matinee. I heard there were no plans for Ben....RATS!

Seeing Williard later today.
Other films with Animal/Human psychic connections: Legacy (white cat) Suspiria (German Shepard seeing-eye dog) Creepers (insects, and the lovely Jennifer Connelly) Empire of the Ants (ants) And just a creepy animal movie: Food of the Gods Lots of interesting ideas for routines. I like the controlling rat idea... |

To me as a 15 year old kid that has seen movies as odd as "Naked Lunch", Willard didn't seem to be much. Infact it was pretty depressing. I think Willard, as the character, was rather stupid, but for some reason he was hooked to his job. It seems like he always liked it in an esoteric kind of way. He should have quit it and moved on from the beginning but he stuck to it and ended up like he did.

I recall the original movie. I don't much care for such movies/topics as my dear cousin "Willard" (my cousin) was quite the animal lover. One of his venomous snakes got loose while mother and I were visiting--I was just a kid. We didn't know the snake was loose until Aunt Connie screamed. Willard was away for the weekend. My uncle released the rats in the cages Willard kept and shut the bedroom door.
We later found out that a rat's shriek was heard 45 minutes later and both the dead rat and snake were found. My cousin Willard died several years later on the Corpus Christi Harbor Bridge enroute to test his metal detector. Always in search of treasure. Willard was one crazy encounter after another. I'm sure he'd be proud of the latest production. <grin> |

I saw this movie last week and was not impressed. I like horror films when they're done well, but this was somewhat boring. I dozed off a couple times, too! Not very scary, almost laughable at many points, and just downright bizarre.
On the other hand, I rented "The Ring" and highly recommend that movie if you want a good scare! "The Ring" is one of those movies you almost have to see twice to understand the symbolism in it. Very well done and well put together.

I enjoyed Williard, mostly for mood, and because you never know what Crispin Glover is going to do.
I'm not really afraid of rats on screen, but seeing them live in NYC is usually unsettling. I used to walk past a McDonalds late at night after work and there was a major infestation of rats in the lot next door. I'd see about a dozen of them in the shadows jumping to and from the dumpster--very icky. I always felt a little nauseous when I'd see them. Maybe one was calling to me... I read up about that "queasy feeling," and it turns out it's a normal, brain-stem reaction to things like filth, disease, infection, etc. It's actually a self-preservation reaction that's hard-wired into us as humans. Which might explain why it's easy for me to see rats on screen and be fine, but I'm scared in person. |
