Any recommendations for a glossy clear finish on a wooden shaft/brass tips wand that is durable, can stand up to mild abuse, and a finish that protects both metal and wood parts?

I would not recommend that you use the same product to cover/protect the wood and brass.
You can try a varnish/sealer on the wood and a brass polish for the tips. Remember that some of the products will give it a slick finish. It may make the wand harder to handle. Personally I use a light wood oil to protect my wooden wands and polish the tips (brass/silver) when ever they will be used or are dirty. MagicRMA

Thanks Magicrma
I have actually been using teak oil on the wood and I also use hand rubbing to get a natural look. The brass is bare. I was just thinking about an alternative treatment. George |

You might look into spray, specifically
Varathane- it's a product name. They used to advertise it for coating roller rinks! I have used it on many wood products with much success, it comes in glossy semi- matter finish. It holds up well, and does a good job of protecting. It will make a fair coating on your brass metals to keep them from tarnishing. If it chips, you will need to remove it all to get a smooth finish again, but it's not too hard to do with good steel wool.

Be careful when using finishes on exotic woods. I make cocobolo and yellow heart wands and the cocobolo is so oily that the finish never dries --- never dries. I varnished a trial wand a couple of years ago out of cocobolo, and a full 6 months later it was still tacky. So, be careful...

Thoroughly wipe the Cocobolo with Acetone, "Acryliclean" or M.E.K. a couple of times before finishing.
