Does anyone want to share how to make a silk fountain? I try to make my own props for two reasons. It saves money and it gives a measure of satisfaction. My "cardiographic" is almost assuredly not as good as buying it. However, it does work and while it was a 2 week effort, it was worth it.
So, if there is someone out there that could give me some pointers, great. If not, I can understand.

Hi Sterling -
Duane Laflin has a DVD all about creating and performing the silk fountain. You can purchase this DVD through his daughter's online magic store, Lock Family Magic. I think the DVD is only $20. He's also taught about making your own fountain on some of his other videos / DVDs. Lock Family Magic also sells pre-made silk fountains, as does Dazzling Magic. I think the basic set up is also in Rice's Encyclopedia of Silk Magic, Vols. 3 and 4 (a few different variations). - Donald

Right Don,
Again, look in Rice's Encyclopedia of Silk Magic. The Rice books are somthing everyone who is interested in silk magic should have. That is, if you have find them. David |

Joe Mogar has one available fo $40. I have one and it looks and works great. Google "joe mogar knives" for his website. I'm sure you could make one, but you'd better be really good with a sewing machine. Jim |

I think a needle and thread would be all you need.

Heck, you don’t need a needle and thread! All you need is a pile of silks and know how to fold them. The original presentation of the trick had dozens of silks blooming and falling from the hand. However, one loose stitch through the center of each silk is all your need for the “sewn-together” versions of the trick.
Gen grant uses over 100 silks in his presentation, maybe closer to 200! His silks bloom slowly as he grinds his two hands together in small circles. It is almost slow motion and poetry to watch. I have a similar set-up using 75 silks. By the way, using the Grant set-up it takes about two seconds to prepare the silks! I also use the Joe Mogar prop/set-up. It was just too inexpensive to pass up and is good for a quicker (and less messy) presentation. It is one of the least expensive available, quality built, easy to use, and a great start point for the trick! The secret in the Silk Fountain is not the prop (which kind you use - it makes no difference) but the steal! I has to be perfect to catch the audience off-guard so that the fountain of silks becomes a wonderment of surprise. This trick is one that magicians that attend conventions tend to be bored by or jaded with but gets tons of ohs and ahs from audiences of non-magicians.

Jeff McBride teaches it also on one of his DVDs. It is fast and simple to perform. But setting it up will take some time.

The method us old guys learned from Tony Slydini requires no sewing. He even intentionally wanted silks singly dropped to the floor!
Once Mark Runge actually caught me in the WalMart plumbing department shopping for my new gimmick replacement! (Every thirty-five years or so I get a new one. I'm extravagant that way!) No doubt there are some very nice fountains that are commercially available. But an advantage of making your own is that you can change colors and sizes to fit your current show. Fall is coming and soon I will convert to orange, gold, green and black. July 4th was red, white and blue. In February down on the Gulf coast, things go purple, green and gold. If you do safety programs red, yellow and green make sense. Audiences love them. Give them the eye candy with lots of silk. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Today, I practiced with old different size squares I had laying around, and it really can be done effectively as Harry and Bob say. Not sure I'd want to rely only on folding in a show. I did notice the smaller fountain I made was harder for me to control without them being "sewn" Bob -- great point to take to heart about learning to make your own. Lots of opportunities to personalize this for audiences, whether based on school or product colors, or the seasons. It's not that hard, and it's actually quite fun to see how many you can get set up while still effectively stealing it.

There is really no problem combining Silk Fountain magic with box magic. To the audience the magic doesn't really start until the silks start "blooming".
Don't overlook the entertainment value to the audience. They pay for the show! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Does anyone know about Funtyme Magic's convertible silk fountain? http://www.funtymemagic.com/shop/item.aspx?itemid=5515
Does that seem like a worthwhile endeavor to you? If I'm starting out in silk fountains, is there a reasonably priced one you recommend? Thanks, Todd |

Refer to the Rice volumes as many on this post have suggested. To hold the silks together, use a tie pin. This way you can add and replace some of the silks when they are worn out. Instead of a ball, I use the toe of a pair of tights. I attach a monofilament to the end of it and place it in my dove pocket. I put a loop on the filament and tape it to my lapel. The tights holds the load well and you can take it out without using Velcro.
I saw a website with Jay Scott Barry doing this. http://www.vigilstudios.com/vsn/ It looks good because I didn’t see any steals and the production of the silks was a very good amount. I would look into this because he must have a new method. |
