I was doing a search on You Tube the other week and found this old performance by Max Maven;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SlsWNgO_W-A Something like this would make for a perfect ending to a routine of mine. Can anyone tell me where I can find a write up of the method for such an effect. Actually having just re-watched it, one can pretty much work it out but ... is a similar effect in print?

Looks like a nice example of equivoque to me.
For a very similair effect in print see, Volition by Annemann,and found in Practical Mental Effects. An oldy but a goody!

It certainly was an equivoque or Magician's Choice. Max refers to elements of this method on his DVD "Nothing".

I just looked. I don't see it. I checked both practical mental effects and practical mental magic

Cheers Jordan. I was thinking about the Annemann effect as a method.
I can think of a few ways to do it, I just like how clean the first two selections look.

I believe this is Max's personal routine and presentation and construction of methods. I don't believe it's actually in print so watch and enjoy, but don't think of it as a lecture.

I have a handling of a five envelope/letter version I developed by request of another performer. I was unaware of Maven's work with this, but this is very neat to see. My starting point was also Annemann's routine but I like to think I've cleaned up the effect quite a bit and expanded it for use with five people and taken away the "magician's choice" aspect of the routine while still keeping it direct - if not more so.

Your routine sounds very interesting indeed Patrick. I have always thought that the the Annemann effect was a hidden gem that has much potential on both a theatrical and practial level. Something that packs small and can, with thought, play very big indeed.

It was interesting to hear how his accent and voice inflextion has changed. He almost sounded foreign (to the U.S., his country of origin) in this clip.

I recently went to see a performance by another Café member, Curt Frye. He did this effect with 7 people. He was performing at a theater and had everyone spell the word theater. I can tell you from a spectator POV that the envelopes were mixed up and it didn’t feel at all that he was using magician’s choice. I was personally one of the people on the stage with one of the envelopes. It was very smooth and clean and it worked out well. Curt had an out on the last two letters too. It didn’t matter whether they were backward or not.
Anyway, I just thought I’d throw that out there so you’d know this has already been expanded and also to give Curt a plug because he did a great job. And it was nice to meet someone from the Café in person. Holly
