A useful tip that has just occured to me.
You could have used the darkness as an excuse for not performing, by claiming that 'a lot of the more sophisticated stuff I do requires reading body language - but the signs to look for are almost imperceptible - such as pupil dilation, micro-expressions and small muscle twitches - and sorry, but in these dark conditions I may not be able to detect the signals that you are leaking'. Happened to me a while back - my friend asked me to do something for his girlfriend - who I just knew was the wrong kind of person. I bombed - no thanks to her! Anyway, I just wish I had thought of that excuse at the time, which came to me a short while after. Curse my slow-witedness. It's a useful excuse to have handy when you don't want to perform, or when you are asked to do something for someone who is unsuitable (for example, they are of low intelligence) ... or if you just want to send people up the garden path. Or when you are unprepared - and in a dark situation.

Can you recommend a good "Linguistic" effect, Mesmer? When I hear "Linguistic" I think of something like Derren Brown Mental Force of the 3 of Diamonds. Is that what you are talking about? there is a lot......do a search and type for "The Busch Factor", "wonder words", and "Body Magic"... hope it helps |

You don't HAVE to be a monkey boy for every Tom Dick and Harry you want do business with. Sometimes just being profesional and, like Jim said, talking to him is fine.
Sometimes it's all an excuse because of fear! I was with my son today at the Rapids Water Park. I met a guy (potential client!) and I told him I was a Trade Show magician. I didn't feel the need to perform anything and he didn't ask. I gave him my card. Often we look hardup when we start performing to prove we have ability. John |

Thanks Robert for your kind words.
I think John Cesta's advice is high quality. And even if you must perform, not performing for a while will build a sense of anticipation. But yeah, I think not performing at all might be more sensible. Just to continue my original two posts - so my friend asks me to divine his girlfiends star sign. I ask her to think of it. And start honing in on what it might be. When the time comes I say 'I've got it ... You're a Capricorn'. She replied 'Capricorn? I was thinking of October!' Argh! Dozy cow! Hope that amuses you lot ... But that's where the excuse came from. Olly

I have an effect called "Pockets" that utilizes what he has in his pockets...nothing more. It would have been perfect. You'd have been working in the Theme Park Biz right now, if you'd only have known

Two things you could of done are "Magician's Force" (using a rock, stick and a leaf) and "Mental Epic."
Maybe you will need Max Maven's "Nothing" DVD incase it happens again. |

Some ideas...
Borrow items and do an equi**** presentation Do a memory demonstration ala Osterlind Borrow cutlery and do some metal bending Borrow a business card and do A.N or a Busch P*** Borrow a watch and do PK time Do an impromptu zodiac sign divination (Alain Nu, Doug Dyment, Marc Paul, and Richard Osterlind have work on this) Borrow a deck and do your best impromptu mental card item But most importantly, make friends, exude a sense of fun and empathize with the prospect. Cheers, Al

This is exactly why I never go anywhere "unarmed". I have been approached in Cafés, restaurants and nightclubs with people asking to "do something" I was even asked to demonstrate magic at Gold's Gym. (In that situation, I performed Ghost Bills and a coin bending effect).
I am always armed with something wherever I go. My close-up case is always in the backseat of my automobile. If I am going out to a formal or semi-formal event, I am usually “packing” as if I was going to perform. (This has gotten me numerous gigs through meeting people and having a business card handy). I think this strategy always impresses the layman because you make the appearance as if they caught you totally unprepared. Especially if you have a powerful effect in your hip pocket and they think you are performing impromptu. |

I was sightseeing at the Schloss Schönbrunn in Vienna. I was chatting with some German tourists at the Café there and they learned what I did for a living. They asked for a demonstration and I was all too happy to oblige. A small crowd gathered and I was congratulated by the manager of the café. (Lunch was also gratis I might add). I was also booked that evening for a social event for some blue-bloods in the city. The paid gig covered my entire vacation and gave me some pretty nice contacts in Austria and Germany. If it was not for me, never mind... |
