Thank you, Jake! Cute Picture!
Steve, you didn't get the point of why your post upset me. There's no use in reiterating what has been said. I'm done. |

Thanks Howard. Just thought I would bring some cheer to a runaway thread. She's gotten big hasn't she? Time goes to quick and life is too short

Bob Solari is one of the truly "good guys" in magic. As a dealer, he doesn't overcharge (quite the contrary), and takes great pride in his work, while remaining humble. Like Roth and Gauci, Solari is one of a very small club of creators/vendors in magic today, different from the cookie cutter mega-dealers, all too happy to hype over-priced junk. These guys are building effects on their kitchen tables into all hours of the night, and always coming up with new ideas.

I guess the only issue is that this time it was not really a "new idea" now was it?
NOBODY has questioned charector. Quite the opposite. Just that perhaps this time he rushed faster than he should have to put this out is all.

Where is it written that a creator of magic (particularly an individual like Bob Solari, who's incredibly prolific), has to produce one-of-a-kind items every time out? I just got a Supreme Slate of Mind. Should its creator be accused of "ripping off" Mental Epic? It's an improvement. Should Joe Porper be accused of "ripping off" the Lippincott Box and selling it as his own? Jon Allen's "Double Back" of Doc Daly (one of, if not THE best packet trick)? Twisted Sisters of B'wave? (another KILLER packet trick). IMHO, "Mind Blank" contains both an improvement on the standard Flustration Count, and has a stronger payoff at the end of the effect. I've performed Bob's "Brainwave For Dummies" for magicians who are familiar with a standard Brainwave deck, and fooled them. In fact, I've performed Eugene Burger's "Thoughtsender" deck (also, basically an old principle) to knowlegable magicians... and when I say, "Go ahead! Check out the cards!", they look at me in shock. They're just not expecting it.
Bob Solari has nothing to prove. He's created enough original magic, and streamlined classic effects (and made them better) so that his reputation should be beyond reproach. |

With nothing to prove you guys keep trying to prove things. Let his reputation speak for itself.
It is what it is. I am done.

Bob's not trying to prove anything. That's probably why you don't see him joining the fray. I'm just standing up for someone I believe is one of the good guys in this industry.

So far nobody has accused Mr Solari of being either an arrogant thief or an out of touch imbecile.
Has anyone asked him about this trick and its similarity to previously marketed (and still for sale) works?

Sylvania or GE? Sparklets or Arrowhead? Burger King or McDonalds? Taco Bell or Del Taco? Sony or Toshiba or Panasonic? Shall I keep going?
Stop your whining. |

Nobody whined, only reviewed.
Well then I guess some did happen after that.

Whao let's hold up a minute, leave Joe Porper out of this. Joe never created anything close to a Lip. coin box. If it is the Strong Box you are referring to, it's nothing like the Lip. coin box, that is a work of art and certainly not overcpriced.
Don't open up the pricing thread again, if you don't engineer, work with wood or metal then you have no qualifications to even comment on what a creator charges or what goes into the pricing factors. Steve reviewed and gave his opinion, he did his job. He had valid points in all areas he touched on. He just doesn't spew things out, that's not Steve, he does indeed put a lot of thought into his reviews. To say Bob is beyond reproach because of his reputation is ludicrous at best, anyones actions can be questioned no matter what their reputation. That's giving others the idea of a license to steal. If I find an effect that has been out and forgotten about, I contact the creator if they are still alive or the last known manufacturer. I will write 3 times by email if they have email and 1 registered letter, if I don't get a response I make 6 units and put them on the market, if they don't respond when the units come out, then I do a full run. That is both ethical and legal at the same time. I made some calls to other performers, ones that have been in the biz as long as I, about 27 years. Suprisingly enough, none of them had heard of Dots Impossible by Al. Not a one of them. So maybe that is the point that can be argued on Bob's behalf, he maybe truely never heard of this or knew the handling, in which case, there is no harm/no foul. I certainly for one would not question his response if he said he was unaware of Al's effect. This proves to you that more than one person can have the same idea. Here's an example, 3 years ago I was working on a folding key, Pete Biro announced that Joe Porper was working on one, I backed off my project, at the same exact time we were both working on the same idea and pretty much had the same gaff. All in all Bob is the one that can make this right and will do so I'm sure, because of his reputation. This was a review on an item that was sent into Steve and Steve did his job. As to bringing up Bob's prices vs. other vendors, I'd like to see whom ever try to make what other high end craftsmen produce, if you were to even try to make 6 of any high ticket item, you would end up in the poor house. That subject is a dead horse, if you don't craft what highend crafters do you have no qualifications to critcize pricing.

Stating that a man I believe to have only good intentions has a reputation beyond reproach, is no more ludicrous that saying I have no qualifications. As a matter of fact, I helped in the design and creation of the Outlaw wallet and Reflections, and have contributed in the development of several of Outlaw Inc's effects. I know exactly how hard Roth works; how every single book in the Homicide trilogy is hand-aged individually, and how ridiculously under-priced his effects are, considering his very narrow profit margin. I also know that Mr. Solari painstakingly builds each Omega gimmick by hand, (which takes him a couple of hours) as they have to function flawlessly, and that no other dealer/creator, save Roth, would do this. We have to tip our caps to these guys, rather than round up a lynch mob. I LOVE the Strong Box. My point regarding Porper in comparing him to Solari, was he took an old concept, and IMPROVED on it, as Bob did with the Brainwave deck. (With BOTH his versions).

So no problem if I post my handling in secret sessions?

You can post your handling here. I do suggest you charge for it, at least get something out of it. this effect is already publicaly available; your handling is not going to be earth shattering, some may even prefer your handling.
if you want to keep your handling a secret, don't share it. other than that, it's yours to do with as you want. |
