Hi there,
Wondering if anyone has any different ideas for presenting "Starcle". I have done it the way that Dan Harlan presents it, but it never seems to suit me. I really love the effect, so does my girlfriend, and I have probably used half a tree's worth of napkins making stars for her. I would be very grateful for any thoughts on any new handling ideas. Thanks, Darrell |

Rather than vanish the napkin at the end, I switch it for a whole napkin...so it's restored...actually easier than a vanish...
catch you later

Hi Clarioneer,
Thanks for replying to my post, I thought that nobody ever would. I like your idea on restoring the napkin instead of vanishing it. Tell me, though, what sort of patter do you go with whilst doing the trick? I would love to hear if you have changed it from Harlan's or not. Thanks, Darrell |

Dazzler,
There was a discussion awhile back about using Starcle with Napkin Rose. I believe the question was, what do you do with the other half of the napkin after you've made a Napkin Rose? Starcle was the perfect answer. That way, if you are preforming for a couple, the guy also leaves with a souvenir. You could also crumble up the Starcle napkin, do a shuttle pass, switch it out for some flash paper, and the whole thing goes up in a comet. |

Hi Bill,
I like your thinking. I am going to watch Harlan again and see if I can't change the patter slightly. Thanks, Darrell |

Wow, I like the comet idea.

If the circle represents the sun, the switching for flash paper and burning would produce a supernova. What is the result of a supernova? ...The birth of a new star.

This is the presentation I currently use for Starcle, when doing it for families.
When I was a little boy, my father traveled with his job and was often gone for days at a time. I would worry about him when he was away and get very sad. One night, when I told him how I felt when he was gone, he picked up a piece of paper. He folded it just like this and tore off a piece, which he gave to me to hold (indicating). Then he said “John, look up in the sky. What do you see?” When I looked up, there above me was a bright, full disc of light. “The moon,” I said. “That’s right,” he said (opening the napkin to show the circle). “And every night when I’m gone, I want you to look up at that moon, because I’ll be there, watching you and smiling down on you, and you’ll know that I’m thinking about you and that I love you. In fact, if you look closely, you may be able to see me” (put face into circle). Well, that always made me feel better, until one night after he had been gone several days, (roll napkin into ball - lap or switch) and when I looked up, there was no moon! (show that moon has disappeared – vanish or switch for restored napkin). I ran to my mother and told her that I was worried about Dad and I couldn’t find the moon. But Mom wasn’t worried at all. She said “John, what do you see in the sky?” As my eyes adjusted to the low light, I began to see pinpoints of light, one by one, hundreds of them, and one brighter than all the others. She then said “Do you remember what your father gave you to hold on to for him?” I did and I reached into my pocket, pulled it out, and opened it up (indicating). She said “as long as there are stars in the sky, your father will be there, watching over you, and sending you his love.” |

I go the simple route with this...
I say that this is a very simple trick I learnt from one of those Children Magic Books when I was a kid... I just do it then... They think I'm just folding a piece of paper and tearing it like some kinda origami thingy... The girl holds on to the Star she helped tear off, I make sure she doesn't crumple it... The other bit I just put it in torn and restored fashion behind the circle as I'm holding it... They expect a kid's trick but are blown away...

I won't go into my patter but I switch the balled up moon napkin for a balled up piece of flash paper with sparkle additive and use a lighter saying I made a wish on a shooting star

I always tell a story about a small boy that was in love and wanted to give to the girl the most beautiful star in the sky...

There has to be any number of possibilities for presentations about the heavens, universe and so on. Check out the book How to Catch a Star by Oliver Jeffers as this story line might give you some inspiration. Now if I could only figure out how to fold/tear the darn thing I'd be doing this as well.

You asked for "different ideas" and here's one for you. I posted it back in 2005. It's a gospel presentation for Starcle. I know it's not for everyone, but maybe someone may get some ideas from this.

On a brief side note, there have been several threads about arriving at a show, but your props don't arrive, or being at some event where the scheduled entertainment can't make it do due to an emergency and you, as a magician are asked to step in and you have nothing with you. What would you do? This would be a parlor situation. What I learned through those threads is that if you were to eliminate mentalism and quasi-mentalism (which hand, etc.) there were not many suggestions for a parlor type show. Starcle is an effect that would fit into the genre perfectly.
Dan's presentation didn't fit me either. The hook for my presentation is "I am often asked, Does magic have any practical value in the real world? I say YES and I learned very early ... shortly after I began first learning magic way back in elementary school. One of my first tricks was the Magic Sunshine Paper Tear, and shortly after I learned it, it helped in an art contest against Elnora Vasco in Miss Walter's sixth grade art class." In summary, I portray Elnora Vasco as a snooty rich kid, with private tutors who had never lost an art competition. I have a running joke about me struggling mightily in school "Some people think I had an advantage since, though we were both in the sixth grade, I was two years older than she was." The contest is to do a rendering of the sun with a napkin, suitable for framing, so, no, we were not allowed to ball it up, and to do it with one and only continuous tear. I, of course, did the magic Sunshine Paper tear. Elnora and I finished at the same time. I show my sun and Miss Walter's liked it even though there were a few flat spots here and there. She liked Elnora's too and just as she is indicating that she is about to pronounce Elnora as the winner again, I say, "But there is more to mine that you need to see. If there is one thing I learned last year in fifth grade science with Mr. Davis AND the year before also in Mr. Davis's fifth grade science class, is that the sun is really a star, and mine shows that." She looks over the sun but does not see anything pertinent. "No, not there, but with the other piece, the one that Elnora simply threw into the waste can." The piece is opened per Starcle and, shows a star, and I beat Elnora for the first and only time. "She was always looking for a rematch through junior and senior and senior high but, unfortunately FOR HER, she was year or two ahead me by then." |

Also, Dan himself has an excellent Bizarre presentation of his Starcle effect in conjunction with an effect called "Deviled Egg", on his Bizarre Magic Show DVD.
